Proper maintenance of your system:

Just like any part of the house, it is important that you maintain the septic system to avoid problems. In order to maintain it with ease, you will need a site map of where you installed it. This way, you do not have to go treasure hunting to locate the tank.

One of the ways to take care of your system is to make sure that it is pumped regularly, at least once in five years. This is to prevent solid particles to accumulate, which could leak to the drain filed. Getting rid of most, if not all of the solid residue regularly will ensure that you do not have to deal with the leaking. It can also prolong the life of your tank.

You also need to have it checked, preferably once a year. You can ask your local building agency about the required frequency of the inspection for the type of system you have. Regular inspection will prevent serious damages on the system.

Runoff from drainpipes and gutters should not be directed to the system as well. This will cause problems because it will get in the way of the treatment processes. Likewise, it is important that access lids be sealed properly. There will be a problem if water fills the tank.

Most importantly, be careful of what you flush in the drain. Do not flush your toilet papers or any materials that should not be thrown there. You may think that they are harmless but they can significantly affect the processes in the septic tank.
