A lot of you out there are really wondering what kind of "educated" questions you should be asking when choosing the right daycare for your child. It's probably one of the most important decisions you will make, making the wrong choice for your child could amount to a inconvenience or a life threatening disaster.

There are many questions to ask a daycare, and over the years I've met all kinds of mothers . Some of which are very organized in their search and others who are not sure of what they want. I'm here today to help you make some choices and hopefully give you a better understanding of what the child care profession is all about.

First of all, you need to decide whether you wish to attend a family childcare or a group childcare. Each type of daycare has it's own set-up and arrangements. Here's a brief summary:

o Family child care normally has one caregiver who is the owner of the childcare. There is no teacher turnover, and the environment tends to be small with a variety of ages present together in one environment. A family childcare center is usually out of the providers home. Sometimes in a basement, or separate room in their house, or perhaps the second level in a home.

o Each family daycare has its own set of rules, and regulations. When choosing a provider be sure to understand what his/her policies are.

o When choosing a family daycare, your relationship (based on trust) is primarily with one provider.

o Sickness is usually less than at group childcares. Less children=less sickness.

o Group centers have all children separated according to age. For example all babies are in one room, toddlers in another, etc.

o Group centers tend to have a professional environment. Bright lighening, commercial equipment. Family daycare's are based in a home like environment.

o Group centers may or may not have large enrollements. Some group centers are small with 20 or more children and others may have enrollment of 250 children.

o Group centers may or may not have consistant providers. Depending on age groups, staffing issues, etc.

o Group centers are directed by "directors". The director staffs all rooms, is supervisor for the teachers, and oversees all problems that may arise.

o Groups centers can involve well known corportations. Kindercare, Children's World, La Petite, to name a few.

Those are just a few distinctions between the two types of choices you may have. It's up to you to decide which one you feel most comfortable with. Once you decide, then you can go from there in choosing the right group center or family day care.

Here are some questions to ask a daycare:

1. For each childcare that you visit be sure to bring a pad of paper and pencil to write down your notes, questions, feelings.

2. When looking for a childcare centers to visit, ask for recommendations from your friends, call your local resource and referral agency ( number located under childcare in phone book), listings in your newspaper, phone book, bulletin boards in your community, local schools.

3. Don't base your thoughts about a childcare over a phone conversation. Give the center a chance by visiting them and meeting those who work there.

4. Collect all information regarding policies for a center. Make sure you are aware of all rules, and regulations.

5. Rely on your gut feeling. If you feel that you would not be happy, chances are your relationship would not work out in the long run.

6. Check any reports that are posted from the licensing bureau. Find out what infractions the center has received.

7. What are their emergency polices?

8. Do children look happy? Is the environment clean? It's ok to have toys laying around, but are those toys sanitized each week to prevent sickness.

9. Who will be taking care of your child? And what happens if that person becomes ill?

10. What if my child become's ill? What is your policy?

11. What type's of accidents have you had where you have had to call the parent?

12. How many years have you been in childcare? Are you licensed? What is your education? What types of classes have you taken for child care in the past year? Are you CPR certified?

13. How long have your current children been enrolled here?

14. Do you provide references from parents?

15. And most of all do you trust that provider? Do you feel that the provider is loving, level headed, energetic, and generally loves all children?

16. Do you see children's art work on the walls?

Most of all take your time making a decision, and don't base your decision on price, fancy equipment, and convenience.

"no"... they were a nice couple... but... what if... what if they went back to that area they really liked, and went into that new home complex, and signed in with the builder you really don't care for? What if... what if they went back to that For Sale By Owner (FSBO) home that was down the block from one of the listings you showed, (the one you turned down another street to avoid passing?) What if... what if, tomorrow, while you're at another client's home inspection, the couple and their children go into an "open house" they see, like the home, and "strike a deal" with the listing agent? What if...?

Did this "visualization" cause you any anxiety? Can you relate to the emotions evoked from this "fictitious" scenario? Chances are, you said yes to one, if not both! Good news! You can do something to alleviate these anxieties and fears. It's called the Buyer-Broker Exclusive Employment Agreement. Wait...a few of you...maybe even most of you... just said, "I don't use that," or "I would never sign that myself; how can I make my client sign that?"

Let me ask you a question. Let's say you go to a listing appointment, and agree on terms/pricing. Would you go back to your office, order full-color flyers, arrange for a virtual home tour on the Internet, order an ad in Homes and Land, call in line ads for your local newspaper, put the home on office tour, set up an "open house" schedule, send out "Just Listed" cards to the homes surrounding the listing, etc., without a listing agreement? Of course not! Then why would you spend dozens of hours of your time (the equivalent of spending your money), with a buyer, without a Buyer-Broker Agreement (which is basically the same as "listing" your buyer?

If you're asking, "Well, how do I get them to sign it?", I will tell you that it's all in the approach. You can't "fear" the agreement, or you will never be able to present it, let alone ask anyone to sign it. Try sitting down with your client, after you get them pre-approved, and before you show them any homes. Conduct a buyer counseling session with them, discussing all facets of the home-buying process. In the course of your presentation, present the Agency Agreement and Buyer-Broker agreement, then set it aside until the end of your discussion. After you have developed rapport, and a confidence/comfort level, you can re-introduce the agreements, and ask for their signatures.

No, it's not always as easy as it sounds! Many consumers have never been exposed to the Buyer-Broker agreement, and ask why other Realtors have never asked them to sign it. I usually say that it is similar to signing a listing agreement to market their home; this is a "listing" agreement to help them purchase a home. I go on to explain that most Realtors give "customer service", while I give "client service", which is on a much higher plane of care and commitment to them, their needs and objectives.

Another objection I get occasionally is the client saying they will work with me in finding a resale home, but not a new home. I explain to them they will not be paying any more for my services on a new home; the builder/developer pays my compensation, and I am able to represent them (the client) exclusively, in the transaction. If the prospective client continues to hedge, I explain that since I can help them with resale or new, we must commit our allegiance to each other fully, or not at all. Don't hesitate to "walk away" from these "customers". You can't lose what you don't have!

One final point: practice your Buyer-Broker presentation, as you would your listing presentation. Try it out on an associate in your office, or record it on a video camera and/or on an audio tape. The more comfortable you get with the approach and presentation, the more relaxed your prospective client will be!

Just remember... it's just like listing a home!

Your Aging Parent - Six Questions to Determine What Help Your Parent Needs

If you are the adult child of an aging parent, you have probably asked yourself, "How do I know what type of help my aging parent needs?" Unless you are a senior resource professional, sorting this out can often seem overwhelming. So, here are six questions to ask to help sort it all out.

 

1.       What is my parent's physical condition?

2.       What is my parent's emotional condition?

3.       What is my parent's cognitive level?

4.       What financial resources are available to pay for help?

5.       What human resources are available to provide help?

6.       What input has my parent given on the entire topic?

 

Your parent's physical condition will help you determine such things as whether your parent needs help with activities of daily living (e.g., toileting, dressing, feeding, mobility), with medication management, or with managing medical conditions such as diabetes or using supplemental oxygen. Your answers will help you decide whether your parent's physical condition allows them to be safe in their current living environment without extra help, or whether you need to arrange for in-home help or possible transfer to an independent or assisted living setting.   If your parent's physical condition is likely to be short-term, as when she is recovering from surgery, you have other options to consider, such as having physical or occupational therapists come to the home, or perhaps a short stay in a rehab setting.

 

Sometimes, your parent is physically capable of taking care of himself, but he has become isolated and is not engaging in social interaction with others. This might be simply because he can no longer see well enough to drive or because many of his friends have passed away and he lacks someone to "hang out" with. Whatever the reason, social isolation can often lead to depression or other emotional difficulties. If this is your situation, you might decide to look into available senior centers, adult day care, or companion services for your Dad.  Depending upon your answers to the other questions, you might also consider an independent or assisted living arrangement since these environments generally offer a great deal of social interaction and stimulating activities.

 

Some of the toughest decisions come when your parent is memory impaired. If your parent wanders outside of the house and gets lost, or leaves the stove on overnight, she needs closer supervision. If she becomes agitated due to the cognitive impairment, she may require someone around all of the time to keep her calm. If your parent suffers from Alzheimer's disease, there are often physical considerations as well, especially in the later stages of the disease. As is always the case, safety should be your first concern.

 

When it's time to figure out what help to put in place, there is no way to escape thinking about the financial side of the decision. While some home care is covered by health insurance such as Medicare, most care related to activities of daily living is not. If your parent has long term happinesslifetime.com care insurance, it will generally begin paying for services once your parent meets the policy guidelines, which typically state that a physician must certify that they have difficulty with two or more ADLs and that this state will continue for at least three months. Some long term care policies provide for "first day" coverage for in-home assistance or services within an assisted living facility.   You need to know whether the care you seek will be covered by Medicare, and if so, you must use a Medicare certified home health agency. If you are paying privately, then you have the flexibility to use any agency or to use a private caregiver who is not associated with an agency. Be sure to take the time to decipher your parent's insurance policies in advance so that you have some idea about what will be covered.

 

Many families are able to take care of their aging parents themselves. This is especially true when there are many adult children who live nearby and who can take turns or divide up the duties. If this is the case with your family, it is helpful to sit down before a crisis strikes to figure out who has the capabilities and the time to do what. In that way, the entire family will function as a team, and if supplemental resources need to be hired, everyone on that team will understand why that needs to happen. Some families set up care contracts so that the family caregiver is paid by the parent for whom they are providing the care.

 

Last but not least, if your parent is able to provide input to this discussion, it is a good idea for them to do so. It is helpful to understand what your parent's desires are, and if practical, to honor at least some of them. This is not always possible, but when it is, it is an important step in the process of a smooth transition.

Work at Home Business - How Do You Know Who to Trust?

There are so many Work at Home Businesses Online today that it is hard to judge one from the other. They all promise so much but how do you know when to trust one of the thousands of websites out there?

Well to begin with, I am not here to tell you that what I do is better than anything else out there on the web because that would just be my opinion. What I am going to share with you is how I went about researching the business I am in, and why this research method is useful with any business You are looking at now.

How,You may ask...well there are 3 things You need to know:

First:

DO NOT go on Google and type in "is ABC Company a scam." (ABC Company is the Company you are researching)

Why? Well, There are too many marketers out there that ride on the back of any popular company's name, which basically means these marketers use dirty marketing tactics to get their business seen.

These marketers will tell you that "ABC Company" is a scam, and instead of working with ABC, you should join their company because it is Soooo much better. Most of these people know nothing about "ABC Company", but that does not stop them from trying to say that it is a work at home scam anyway.

Second:

Look for the validity of a company with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, and places of that sort because they just have facts. They are unbiased in their information. They do not care if the company is good or bad because they have nothing to gain from the person checking this information, and they must validate the complaint in order for it to be published on their site.

One thing to keep in mind, these online businesses work with thousands of people every month...so there are bound to be a few complaints just because people are people; however if there are too many within the past 3 years then you might want to think twice about getting into that business. (I would consider 10 too many)

These companies are your best resource on research to see if any work at home business is a work at home scam and they will have it documented by the information you will find.

Last:

After looking at the places I mentioned above, take a look at the business itself. Look at the information given to you after you have paid the initial price to get into the system. (this is either the $1 fee, the application fee, or some small e-book you may have purchased)

Work at home scams will not give you the full information, they will never get in touch with you by phone, you may not be able to even get into the information that you purchased.

Ask Yourself these questions:

Do they have a money back guarantee that lasts for at least 30days on your initial purchase?

Do they let you talk to others in the business?

Do they give you a chance to try out at least part of the system for 30days? (example: our system has a student account that you can use for 30 days free)

Does the company take anyone with a pulse, or do they limit the people that can start with the business by using an application process like most colleges do?

Have you heard from the person that owns the website?

Do they give a phone number, e-mail address, skype name, or any other personal information where you can get in touch with them to see if it is real?

Anytime you start a work at home business you must do your due diligence (research) on the business.

You need honest, non-biased opinions versus dirty marketing tactics used by people who have businesses that cannot stand on their own 2 feet as you will see if you research on Google. I know this is the way I look up any work at home business to find out if it is a scam. I ran my personal company and the company we work with through this process and they both came out the other side with flying colors.

In the end, do not use Google, go through the non-biased opinions of government agencies to see if the work at home business is legit, and then ask yourself the questions above and you will be less likely to ever join another scam again.

Russia's Orphans - Haunting Memories

Five years ago, I received an unexpected invitation from the Department of Education in the Far East of Russia. They wanted me to come for a visit so that we could talk about using distance-learning technology in their remote orphanages.

As background, the DOE in Russia is responsible for the 3,000,000 orphans that live in their many orphanages. Unfortunately, the reason they were considering the distance-learning project turned out to be quite a sad story. They were hoping that by providing more education to the orphans, it would help break a continuing cycle that seemed to plague the orphanages. Former orphans, who were now young married adults, were abandoning their own children when they found themselves unable to earn enough money to support their families. They were just not prepared for the harsh realities of life. Moreover, without family members around to help them, their babies were now appearing on the orphanages' doorsteps, in hopes that the kids would have a better chance for survival. As crazy as this might sound, these impoverished adult orphans are the lucky ones. An even sadder reality is that less than 50% of all Russia's orphans will live to see their 20th birthday. Suicides, failures to thrive, severe medical conditions - untreated due to strained budgets or access to medical treatment - and a host of other problems has made for a very fragile existence.

As we sat in the office of the Director, all of us knew that more education wasn't the entire solution. We clearly understood that the absence of a loving family to guide, encourage, love and nurture these children was still the core issue. However, all of us hoped that by giving the orphans more access to knowledge and education that it would help to better prepare them for life, after they left the orphanages.

After these preliminary discussions, I was off to see the children firsthand. A wonderful physician by the name of Dr. Tatiana Khoudoyarova was my guide as I visited the orphanages. She was both a pediatrician and the Chief Allergist in charge of the health for many of the children in the Far East of Russia. More importantly, she was also the only person that knew enough English to speak with me about the issues during the trip! She turned out to be a delightful person, and it was a joy to have her accompany me on this adventure. When she got around the children, I couldn't help but smile. She laughed with them, hugged them tightly, and spun them around in circles when they came to greet her. They clung to her legs from the time we got to the orphanages until we left.

Over the nine days I was there, Tatiana and I talked about many of the misconceptions between our countries. I told her that many Americans believed the children were kidnap victims, and that these kidnappings fueled a lucrative adoption market aimed at American families, anxious to adopt. She told me that many people in Russia think that the Americans are 'buying' their children to kill them for their organs! The Cold War has done so much to color our opinions of each other. Now, law after law adds even more barriers to adoption, as both countries seek to insure the safety of the children.

Although I could see that these worries were without much basis, I remained optimistically skeptical. After all, didn't we all build bomb shelters here when these people were our mortal enemies? About 3 days into my journey across the beautiful remote areas of the Far East, I saw something that really troubled me. When I walked out into the hallway, I saw Tatiana giving money to the caregivers at one of the orphanages. Hearing all of those stories about under-the-table-payoffs in Russia, I assumed the worse. How could people who were looking after these beautiful children make money from their misery?

When I finally confronted her, I found out more about this woman in a couple of minutes, than I ever could have found out in a lifetime of misinformation. There was a simple and "amazingly kind" reason behind the money changing hands. It turns out that the caregivers were telling Tatiana that the little girl had come down with an ear infection. Tatiana was giving the caregivers a prescription - and her own money - to buy the necessary antibiotics for the little girl. All this was because her adopting parents from America were coming to pick her up in a week. They were all worried that if the couple saw that the little girl was sick that they would refuse her and ask for another child.

Tatiana said that this sort of thing happened a lot, especially when there were so many kids to choose from in their orphanages. She said many parents were very worried that they were getting children with "special needs" that they might not be able to deal with. She told me that this was a healthy little girl, who didn't deserve to have her life turned upside down because of a temporary and easily cured illness. She was simply embarrassed that there wasn't enough money available to treat these kids, and she didn't want me to know.

So seeing that I was okay with all this - even sympathetic and supportive - she was more open about giving out money in front of me. It was easy to see how special she felt about the children. If the orphanages didn't have money for tests and drugs, then she would spend her own. Even the caregivers where kicking in their own meager funds to help. When I asked, she said, "No, they don't reimburse any of us. Anyway, I don't care about the money. I am just happy to see the children get a family to love them."

Those sweet words dropped all of my remaining barriers. How rare, I thought, to find out that there were people like her in the world, and in all places, Russia. I started to question my own values. Had I lost my heart working all those years in the corporate world? My problems seemed so trivial by comparison to those faced by these kids.

Tatiana's heart and love continued to mesmerize me. When it came time to end my 9-day trip, I just couldn't walk away that easily. Yes, I was actually falling for her. I never wanted or expected it at this point in my life, but here it was. Had I not spent this time with her, I wondered if I ever would have been so attracted to her in another setting. Well, that really didn't matter now, did it? So I steadied my courage, and invited her to be my date at a wedding here in the States - an Elvis Presley wedding in Las Vegas, no less! Although I had the honor of giving away the bride because her dad had passed away, I was thinking, "How am I ever going to explain Las Vegas and Elvis Presley to Tatiana?" I didn't have to worry. It turns out that we send a lot of programming to Russia, ranging from TV shows like Jerry Springer to most of our Hollywood productions like the Governor Schwarzenegger movies. I thought how interesting it must be to learn about Americans this way.

As fate would have it, the betrothed couple called off their wedding the day before the event, and just as Tatiana's flight was landing. However, that too was only another part of God's hand at work. Embarrassed by her long trip here, I asked Tatiana if she would like to stay and go with me to Disneyworld in Florida - to a convention where I was speaking the following week. She smiled and agreed, and then asked if she could contact a family there that had adopted three children from her. "Of course!" I said enthusiastically, and I suggested that we take their whole family to dinner on the Disney property.

That little dinner date turned out to be yet another powerful insight into this wonderful woman. They say kids only show honest emotions. Well let me tell you, when they saw Tatiana coming through the doors of the restaurant, they ran to her and jumped into her arms, yelling, "Tatiana...Tatiana!"

I thought what a wonderful feeling it must be to know how much she had helped these children, and this loving couple. Even more, what a fairy tale it must be for the kids! How could they have ever imagined moving from their orphanage to a home near Disneyworld!

Many hugs, tears, and laughs later, I was feeling more and more moved by the wonderfully fulfilling life that Tatiana had created for herself. How could I have allowed my priorities to get so out of 'whack' with the truly important things in life? Why did I choose the career to which I ended up devoting my life? And why did no one tell how much needed to be done in this world?

In the end, I decided that everything had to happen the way it did, or I would have never met this beautiful woman. Even more so, I would not have had the ability to take the next steps that were now becoming clearer and clearer.

The memories from that trip were very powerful, and deeply etched in my mind. Adding to these memories is the guilt of taking Tatiana away from the children. She was helping over 100 orphans find a home every year. Moreover, there was the memory of that first time I walked up to one of the playpens at the orphanage. It was so crowded with the little ones. It seemed like there were 20 three-year olds inside a space made for two. Splotches of green ointment covered the children to keep them from infecting one another. They looked like they had been in a paint ball fight.

It was when I walked up to the edge of the playpen, that those innocent babes broke my heart for eternity. They all lifted their little arms up in the air! All they wanted was for me to pick them up and hold them. There was no way I could have prepared for that moment. How could such a simple human need, be so rare a gift for these kids? I wanted to take all of them home with me. My emotions erupted, and tears filled my eyes. There were just so many children and so few caregivers. One of the caregivers had only a few more months to live herself. She was stricken with a terminal cancer, but she wouldn't even stay home to care for herself. Who would hold her babies?

It's just not possible to forget what I saw there. How could so many children be lost and forgotten in our world? Then I wondered which ones might have given us the cure for cancer. I wondered which ones might have brought us to the brink of new discoveries or thinking. How could finding them a home not be the primary focus for all of us on the planet?

The thought that will haunt me forever is that the only difference between them and us is the luck of birth. Everything that I considered important dissolved in those 10 seconds in front of that playpen. Tears fill my eyes every time I think about those babies. To make matters worse, I kept putting myself in their place. I wondered what it would feel like if I were always the one turned down by the visiting couples. Was it the way I looked? Was it something I did wrong? What would life be like if I was unable to make a living? Would I do what 40% of these kids do and turn to crime, prostitution and the Russian Mafia? Would I fall victim to some fanatical terrorist group who offered me food and work in exchange for some day having to blow myself up for their God? Maybe this was the best I could hope for - if I were in their shoes.

So who should solve this horrible problem? According to the estimates of the adoption world, there are over 500 million children without homes. When will we give these children their lives back? A good friend answered those questions for me. He simply said, very slowly, "If not now, then when? If not you, then who?"

So now, my life begins anew. Five years later, Tatiana and I have just celebrated our 4-year wedding anniversary. Seeing her love and focus has truly changed everything in my life. I can no longer care about "bottom lines..." Instead, I think about how to send "life lines" to those children that we left behind.

Now the hard work really begins. I am rapidly shedding my corporate life, and as quickly as possible, I'm taking on a new life dedicated to helping all those children find a home. As a Christmas present for Tatiana last year, I formed a nonprofit called The Orphan Foundation. We invested in 400 donation boxes, and we started putting them out in gas stations and convenience stores to raise money for adopting families. With domestic adoptions averaging $19,180 per child, and with international adoptions costing even more, we know we need to eliminate or minimize this financial barrier. As we grow our volunteer "donation box managers" across the country, more donation boxes will bring more dollars, and we will be able to help remove this heavy financial barrier for many loving families. It takes a full year, and 35 donation boxes, in high traffic locations, to pay for one domestic adoption. It takes 50 for an international adoption.

Many wonderful people have already signed up to help us, and we now have a website to seek more volunteers and donations: TheOrphanFoundation.org TheOrphanFoundation.org. We have a dozen business and adoption experts on our Board of Directors now, and we hope to round up 5,000 "donation box managers" this year, to help us manage 5 donation boxes, each. For all of us, it has become a race for hope. The more volunteers we can round up, the more kids we can help find homes and loving families.

So here I am, at the age of 60, beginning a new journey - a journey of love. Someone posted this question on one of the AARP chat forums: "Is life beginning or ending at 55?" A smile forms easily on my face, because I think you know the answer.

At 60, I say to all of you, "I think I finally just discovered what life is all about!" Tatiana and I send you our love and blessings, and we hope you discover the richness that waits for all of us, if we only look.
