Exploring the Limits of Respite Care Giving

Respite caregiver limits differ among different agencies. Sometimes you can contract individually with trained caregivers not working for an agency who is taking on clients. But even then, there are limitations imposed by liability insurance companies that cover workers.

Most care workers enjoy their time with patients and families and are glad to lend their helping hand, however, some things they cannot include as part of a respite agreement.

For example, hospice care is usually not offered. Under the umbrella of hospice care, the option of respite is available, but respite care only gives basic kinship caring. It is never identical with aspects of hospice help, which has more medical and spiritual components.

Nursing also is not included. Administration of injections and medication, running of tests, such as diabetes related blood glucose tests are an example of nursing functions. Nursing may be involved in respite care arrangements provided at adult daycare facilities, nursing homes or other venues where specialized caregivers are trained in patient primary health concerns.

Emergency medical care is also not part of such services, although all respite care workers need to be trained in first aid and CPR. If need occurs, a worker contacts appropriate medical responders. They will then provide emergency care or transportation to an emergency room.

Child daycare service for working parents is not considered. Parents of children with special care during the workday may wish to find a purposely outfitted daycare center. Similarly, a worker is not a handyman or a housekeeper, and shouldn't be expected to do any home repair or housekeeping.

Ensuring you know in advance all the expectations and details of the respite caregiver will make the experience better for all involved.

Independent Living Aids For Seniors

Independent living is generally seen as a philosophy and way of looking at disability and society. The aim is to work for self-determination and equal opportunities. The philosophy promotes the fact that people with disabilities are the experts in their own needs and take initiative to take political power.

Centers for Independent Living are springing up al around the United States in order to teach people with disabilities to take more initiative over their lives. Peer support groups and Independent Living Skills classes are being established to allow caregivers and patients to take more control.

The Independent Living philosophy runs on the fact that people with disabilities have the same right to participation, degree of freedom, control and self determination. Depending on the level of disability of the patient, support services such as financial assistant, assistive technology and personal assistance are seen as being necessary to achieve the same level of independence.

Over the recent years, the IL movement has spread from North America. There are also many people who are proposing Aging In Place initiatives. Independent living can often be achieved through an incorporation of universal design principles, telecare and other assistive technologies.

The purpose of these programs is not to have to move from place to place and being familiar with the community allowing people to age in place. There are now Certified Aging-In-Place Specialists in place to help wit the growing need of this service model for seniors. More and more home health happinesslifetime.com care agencies are being developed to fill the need for non-medical or custodial care.

The Secrets to Own Your Property in Spain and Canary Island

For over 17 years I live in Lanzarote, one of the main islands belonging to the Canary archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 km off the Moroccan coast. Who else has not dreamed of owning his own property in the sun and particularly in Spain and the Canary Island?

You have to be relatively careful if you decide to take the big step and buy your property in Spain. Remember the latest scandals in Marbella and Lanzarote, where many homeowners find themselves in the uncomfortable position of knowing if their properties are legal and if a notice of demolition is happening.

Here are some tips for buying your property in Spain:

At first you'll have to decide on the use of your property: do you intend to rent it to tourists, to rent it to residents or to live permanently in Spain? Depending on your choice you will need to define your needs for the vicinity of a school, hospital, and recreational activities.

Once your specific situation, you can begin contacting a local estate agency to visit the most property in the area that interests you. Try to come back at several times and on different days, questioning neighbors about the quality of the environment and locality. Double-check at the trustee if applicable, the general conditions to see if your favorite animal, or tourist rental are permitted and especially if the former owner has paid all his bills with the trustee.

It should be noted that in Spain the trustee may object to a sale and even appropriate your property in case of dispute.

Once all these small checks done, you'll need a lawyer to verify first if the estate agency is competent and above all to be very sure that all legal titles are valid and that there is no mortgage or other expenses linked to this property.

Don't be ashamed to ask the different lawyers you will meet if they are really specialized in property laws.

Do not neglect this step especially in Spain because it often happened that the properties are resold several times that the building permit is not valid and other mishaps. Make sure also if all bills including electricity and water have been paid, because those debts in Spain are always attached to the property and not to the owners.

Also make a little visit to the town hall to check that local taxes are up to date and make sure that in the near future there are not important projects related to your village or your home.

Those are the main points to check when buying your dream home in the sunny Spain. Choose a good real estate agent and a good lawyer: that is the secret of your success. Remember as well, it will take about 10% extra on the purchase price for notary and lawyer fees.

See you soon in Spain!

Hiring a Home Care Provider

For many people, the ability to live out their final years in the comfort of their own home is a heartfelt wish. It can be possible with the help of a great home care provider. Many people find that when they age, they need help with certain aspects of their life but do not need the full time care that a retirement or nursing home provides. There are many helpful guidelines that can be used when looking to hire a caregiver. The following are suggestions for a successful partnership with a home care provider:

1. Find a provider that is associated with a reputable agency or association; this can provide safeguards in case something goes wrong with the relationship

2. Home care giving agencies should be licensed, bonded, and insured; all associates of the agency should be professional and ethical

3. Discuss all financial aspects up front to make sure that the patient can afford the care and will not be surprised by unexpected costs; check to make sure that the patient's insurance, including Medicare if applicable, is compatible with the providing agency.

In addition to choosing some type of agency or provider, the individual home caregivers need to be chosen carefully to make sure they are a good fit for the needs of the patient. Some additional requirements include:

1. Interviewing the candidate to see their personality and whether they get along with the patient

2. Discuss any physical requirements of the job such as lifting, cleaning, or driving; make sure they have a valid driver's license if driving is part of the job

3. Check any references provided by the caregiver

4. Discuss any boundaries of the job, such as whether the caregiver may make personal calls or have personal visits while working at the patient's house

5. Every patient is different; determine whether the caregiver can handle any specific issues with the patient such as dementia, diabetes, or other concerns.

It may be tempting to make all decisions for the patient, especially if their mental capacities are diminished, but it is important for the patient to feel like they are a part of the hiring process. Let them evaluate the choices and offer their opinions, where appropriate.

Transitional Living Homes As A Real Estate Investment

What exactly are Trans Homes? Transitional living homes provide short term housing to homeless individuals who are on a low income housing program. These housing programs are provided by multiple state and local agencies to assist individuals with low incomes, one such program is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program.

This program is targeted to people with sufficient income but no money saved for security deposits or fees. Trans Homes residents are selected from individuals who are in situations of homelessness due to extreme financial hardships, abuse and addiction. This type of housing is also frequently used program for those re-entering society from a corrections facility and those needing rehabilitative services. Residents usually stay in the Trans Home from 6 to 18 months.

Transitional homes are not a permanent housing solution for the homeless; halfway houses provide long term housing solutions to the homeless and are a totally different investment.

How does it work as an investment?

There are two ways you can go about investing in Transitional Living Homes. You can either run the entire operation yourself (including forming a non-profit corporation, working directly with the state and federal agencies, finding, screen and managing clients) or you can outsource the entire operations and focus on just owning and managing the property.

Unless you are dead set on running a group home, it is better to partner with Community Services Provider who already runs Trans Homes and are looking for houses for their clients. This gives you the opportunity to make this a truly turn-key investment.

The Community Services Provider will find, screen, place and manage the Trans Home residents. They collect the rent and then pay you. In each home there is one resident chose to be the on-site manager, giving the Community Services Provide eyes and ears in each home. The homes tend to be well maintained. Residents who do not abide by the rules of the home can and will be kicked out of the home and risk losing their government subsidy. Along with on-site management, this provides significant incentive for the residents to take care of the property.

Why turn key investments?

Turn-key investments are the only way to truly passive income. Passive income allows you to fund your live style and allow you to pay for the things you want now and allow you to put money away for things you will want in the future. A turn-key investment minimizes your time and efforts needed to generate an income.

What kind of government regulations apply to my investment home?

Unlike Adult Foster Care Homes, there are no government regulations on the home owner other than providing a clean safe home with a city certification. But that is a totally

What is the demand?

At this time there is an almost unlimited demand for space inside a Transitional Living Homes program. This is one of those investments that are aligned with the current economic trend. The additional economic hardships that are coming will only increase the demand for this type of housing as more people become homeless due to job loss or reduction of income from working less.

How is the home managed?

Assuming that you "outsource" the Community Services Provider portion of the business, you would be responsible for only the home. That includes home repair, home maintenance, snow removal and lawn care.

Opportunity to give back

Unlike with most investing there is a tremendous opportunity to help people who are homeless while at the same time create outstanding investments. This is investing at its best.

What are the exit strategies?

There are two basic Trans Homes exit strategies. The first one is base on the basic premise of the program, which is to help homeless individuals integrate back into society by helping them get a job and own a home. The goal is to get one of the residents in the home to a point where they can carry a mortgage and subsequently purchase the home where they are living.

The second option is the provide 30 day notice to the services provide to vacate the premise. It will usually take another 30 day to relocate the current residents. So in about 60 days you can be in a position to sell the home.

How much money can I make at this?

Let me give you an example, a house in Detroit that would normally generate about $850 a month income will now get over $1,920 a month income when converted into a Trans Home. The best part of the story is not the income but the profit.

That home in Detroit will have about a $700 / mo holding cost. So your profit is only about $150 / mo. When you make it a Trans Home, you profit goes from %150 / mo to over $800/ mo! That is over a 5 fold increase in profits.

Home Care Specialists - What Are They?

Home Care Specialists are dedicated men and women whose job is to provide personal care services to individuals so that they may continue to lead productive lives at home or in their community. The recipients of services provided by Care Specialists are typically senior citizens who are looking to continue leading an active lifestyle, but need some assistance with daily activities such as medication disbursement, meal preparation, housekeeping, grooming and even transportation. Home-Care Specialists work very flexible schedules in order to accommodate the needs of their patients, and are often available as a live-in companion, overnight caretakers or just on an as-needed basis.

Most companies that provide Home-Care Specialists run extensive background checks and interviews on potential caretakers in an effort to provide their clients with individuals who are safe, reliable and most of all compatible with the needs of their care recipient. Anyone who is looking to hire a Home-Care Specialist should be aware that these individuals are not certified to provide medical care, like a visiting nurse, but are caregivers who are trained to assist with housework, physical care, personal hygiene and monitoring daily prescription intake.

When choosing to employ a Home-Care Specialist, one should always discuss the idea with family members, friends and local assistance agencies so that everyone who is involved will have input as to what the real needs of the recipient are. Once a Home Care-Specialist has been employed then the time should be made to spend a day in the household with the caregiver in an effort to get them accustomed to daily routines. They are going to need a written list as well as oral instruction into the lives of the person who they will be assisting. Home Care Specialists are meant to be non-intrusive to the lives of their client and by being well informed of their likes and dislikes this will make for a smooth transition once care begins. Ideally, the person chosen as the Home Care Specialist will be available whenever the need for their services arises but a back-up plan should always be in place to cover absences due to illness or vacation.

A family member, friend or neighbor should always be available in case the Home-Care-Specialist is not able to meet a particular need. Quite often, the agency that hired your Home-Care-Specialist will be able to provide an alternate caregiver as a replacement for the day, but it should be known that many care recipients are apprehensive about having a stranger in the home, other than their assigned Home-Care-Specialist, and may not be comfortable with even a short-term replacement. The ideal Home Care Specialist will become an extended member of their client's family and a personal bond will be created that provides the patient with a sense of trust, security and assurance that they are being well taken care of. If the proper amount of care is put into choosing a Home Care Specialist, then the end results will be a pleasant situation for all involved.

Be an LPN, Enroll in LPN Programs!

LPNs or Licensed Practical Nurses are becoming in demand today. It's undeniable that there have been several changes in the factors that affect healthcare, and these changes have opened the door for licensed practical nurses to be portraying an important role in the society.

An LPN (licensed practical nurse) or in some states referred to as LVN (licensed vocational nurse), is someone who provides care to the patients but within the supervision of a registered nurse, a physician or other licensed health practitioners. An LPN can do routine tasks such as vital signs, bathing the patient, feeding the patient, and other technical skills, which do not require advance critical thinking skills such as nursing assessment, planning of nursing interventions and evaluation of the nursing care done.

Although LPNs also have to think before responding to a particular clinical situation, the registered nurses are usually the ones who are allowed to do health assessment, provide a nursing diagnosis, do evaluation, and perform health teaching. But this is not a reason for LPNs to sit pretty in a couch, as the work of an LPN also demands a coordinated way of thinking and skills to meet the needs of the patient.

There are many reasons why the need for licensed practical nurses may increase, but the most essential factor is the increase in the population of the elderly. According to the US Census, the approximate number of citizens above the age 65 in year 2020 would boom up to 53 million. This population group mostly needs nursing care and support because the elderly are the common persons who have long-term illnesses. But even if an elderly doesn't have any serious, debilitating disease, he or she may still need to receive assistance in doing daily activities. An elderly also needs someone to be active in promoting his or her safety at home. Licensed practical nurses can work in nursing homes or hospitals to care for these elderly patients.

LPNs are generalists - meaning, they can work in any healthcare setting or clinical area. LPNs can work in nursing homes, doctor's offices, outpatient care centers and happinesslifetime.com in home healthcare. On average, the mean salary of an LPN with a work experience less than 1 year is from 27,245 to 39,598 dollars. This figure increases as the work experience increases too. There are many colleges, hospitals, vocational schools, and other independent health agencies that provide practical or vocational nursing programs. Usually these LPN programs last for 9 or 12 months and provide both classroom and clinical exposures. At the end of the program, the graduates need to take an NCLEX-PN license.

On the other hand, LPN programs are not only limited to the four corners of a classroom, as online LPN programs are also available and are becoming a trend nowadays. An online program gives one the convenience of studying at home plus, eliminating the hassles of conflicting schedules. For my information about LPN programs, kindly visit this site, and find out everything about the LPN online experience!

Foster Care - Alternative for Gay and Lesbian Couples

Finding proper foster parents for the many children living in state custody is an on-going battle. Some families are happy to take in foster children in the hopes they find a supportive environment until they are legally adopted. It takes a generous soul with a unique ability to overcome heart ache to offer a home of this sort. Other faster parents find they have grown so attached to their foster children that they adopt the children and remove themselves from the fostering system. Gay and lesbian couples didn't always have the "right" to open their homes to foster children, but growing concern about children growing up in orphanages and group homes has forced the foster care system to open the doors to gay and lesbian couples.

Why Were Gay Men and Lesbians Not Allowed to Foster Children?

The foster care system is based on the same laws as the United States government. As little as 10 years ago, gays and lesbians were allowed no legal rights as couples or as parents. Great advances have come in the last 5 years when experts started realizing the positive impact gay and lesbian couples could have on the lives of children who otherwise would be lost in group care for all of their young lives.

Gay and lesbian couples who wish to be parents have the option to apply as foster parents. They will have to undergo the same rigorous application process complete with home visits and references. Once approved, foster children will be assigned to the home and parents given a stipend to help cover care and expenses.

Foster care is not a permanent situation and children can be removed from foster care for a variety of reasons. If the foster parents no longer wish to care for the child, they can ask for reassignment. Other reasons a child may be removed from the home include personal wishes of the child or restoration of parental rights.

Some children stay in foster homes for many years without ever being adopted by the foster parents. Others remain in a foster home for years only to be pulled from the home by a biological parent leaving the fostering couple devastated at the loss of a child.

Gay and lesbian couples who wish to open their homes as foster parents need only apply at the local agency for approval. Some states are more respectful of gay and lesbian rights and others are not.

Family Caregiver - Part 1 - Caring For Elderly Disabled With Parkinson's

We are married 32 years, so there were good times before he became ill. I have no degrees or titles than enable me to offer these tips for Parkinson's care except that of being the family caregiver to my husband. For the last 12 years we have lived with this disease. In the beginning he was only mildly affected but over time his disease has progressed to him being a wheelchair patient. For the first 6 years I was his sole care giver, living with and getting to know his limitations that changed from day to day.

He was 71 years old, I, 22 years younger, was 49. (He is now 82, I am 60. ) My career came to an abrupt halt as I stayed home to be the family caregiver for my husband. In desperation I searched frantically for assistance to cover his medications and help to adapt the house to his needs. Everywhere I tried, either there was no program to help us or we were only dollars from being eligible. Finally one day I made the right contact at the PA Department of Public Welfare Area Agency on Aging for our county.

I had tried there the previous year and was told there was no program to help. I called there again and again every few months. On my last call I coincidentally timed it at the beginning of a new program and was able to get my husband enrolled. The program was not for Parkinson's disease patients only, but for any senior that might otherwise be placed into a nursing home. The goal of this program is to keep the senior patient in their home, out of a facility, as long as possible. We have been enrolled 6 years. This program has been a life saver, life changer.

I am still the family caregiver but this resource

* has provided for us a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to help me care for him and enable me to regain a few hours a day of my own.

* helped us make adaptations to our home so he can use the bathroom and stairs.

* has given him prescription coverage.

I strongly urge you to seek help from this agency if you are or have a senior that needs assistance. There are other agencies that may be able to help in different ways. Keep knocking on doors, making phone calls.

Our age difference has benefited this relationship and how we are able to deal with the demands of his condition. If I were older, I would not be physically able to care for him at home. The weird part of this, if it was me that was sick, because I am not a senior (yet), I would not be eligible for these programs. Some of you may be in this position, and I don't know what advice to offer to you.

Hopefully you will find the help you need. By the way, being family caregiver in my house also includes two senior Black Labrador retrievers aged 11+, who are on medication. Could the family help? We have no children. My husband has four children by his previous marriage, of whom only one keeps touch with him. She cared for her mother-in-law until she passed away a few years ago. She knows what is involved in caring for her father, but does not have the time due to her other commitments.

I do try to keep her in the loop when his condition changes and she does offer moral support. We all seem to have at one time or another the responsibility of being a family caregiver. Dealing with his varying conditions has given me reason to create some interesting items that help me to care for him.

Like most things in life, there are also some things to be aware of when pursuing online business opportunities. First off, people have to be careful and wary of each opportunity that may catch their eye. This is because there are some unscrupulous people in the world today who look for ways to make money out of an unsuspecting victim. These kinds of people think of different ways to scam people and, unfortunately, some of these scams have found their way to the internet. There are some sites which promise to return your investment twice or even triple the value but instead don't pay you; the worst case scenario being that the company has suddenly disappeared leaving the victim helpless as to get their money back. Although there are some agencies and companies that have been set-up to safeguard online transactions, there are some transactions which still get past these companies' watchful eyes. To avoid these kinds of scams, a person is advised to do thorough research on the company that he/she is interested in and, if possible, gather and read the feedback of those people who've worked for the company before.

A person can make money online. There are lots of opportunities found on the internet. Some of them come at a price and some are free online business opportunities. All it takes is the patience and the perseverance to pursue and achieve your goals and dreams. However, you also have to be careful about some of these opportunities. It's better to be safe than sorry, as they say.

Everybody thinks about money. It is a basic fact of life that even the happiest people need it. People need it to eat, pay the bills, and send their children to school. In this day and age, people can find ways to make money in a variety of ways. Some people even find the way to do so by using the internet to find free online business opportunities.

Using the internet to make money is not a new concept. However, there seems to be a boom in the number of people taking advantage of the World Wide Web's different resources. The reason for this may lie in the fact that while some people enjoy going to the office and meeting new people and to do their work, others may find it constricting to work in an office environment. They'd rather work from the comforts of their own home. And then there also others who take advantage of the free online business opportunities that the internet offers to supplement or to add to their income. The money that they make from their regular jobs simply isn't enough or is barely enough to pay the bills and to meet other needs. The money that they make out of having an online business may go a long way and give them some room to breathe in with regards to their finances.

Searching over the internet for these kinds of opportunities can yield many results. If a person takes the time to go over each search result, they may find that there are a number of ads offering them the opportunity to make money online for a small fee as an investment. This is because people want to earn more and spend less. These kinds of opportunities (whether they're free or not) varies depending on your expertise or the kind of opportunity that you want to take.

They can offer their services in things like web design, photography, transcription, or other things that they're good at or have had some experienced in doing. Aside from offering their services, people can also choose to sell items over the internet. They may also avail of the different forums, blogs, and social networking websites to promote these goods and services. The venues of doing so are endless if one knows where to look.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Home Care But Were Afraid to Ask

A senior tsunami is on its way. Since the year 2000 the national population of those 60 years old and older has grown by 11% It is estimated that by the year 2015 the 85+ population will increase by 65%

And to the majority of seniors there is nothing sweeter then home. Statistics show that most seniors want to remain in their home close to family and friends. Be it that they are living alone or with family, a change in their physical or mental condition, whether sudden or gradual over time may make it necessary for them to receive assistance with the activities of daily living.

So they want to stay home but they need some level of care, what do you do? The answer would be to consider the services of a home care agency.

What do you look for when considering a home care agency?

An agency should be licensed. It is required in most states. Accreditation by a nationally recognized accrediting body such as the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) is extremely important.

The agency should be able to assist you by referring fellow professionals such as Elder Care Attorneys, Social Workers or Geriatric Care Managers should the need arise. This is something you long distance family members should consider.

Look for an agency that has been servicing the community for a substantial amount of time. One that has a thorough application process and that trains their own employees. One that adheres to strict written personnel policies, has nurses on staff to evaluate the patients care and communicates with the family and patient's physician about that care. Are available 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Now the all-important question-who pays for the services?

Although most Americans over the age of 65 are eligible for Medicare they must be homebound, under a physicians care and require nursing or therapy services in order to receive home health services. This usually occurs after a person has been hospitalized. In most cases the hours will be short and not on a long-term basis. An established agency contracts with all the hospital based Certified home health agencies in their areas of service and will be on a list provided by the discharge planner.

For those needing care on a long term basis there is Medicaid, provided they are financially eligible. In order to meet those requirements you may need to enlist the help of an Elder Care Attorney or Medicaid Specialist. A reputable agency should be able to refer you to one.

Most health insurance policies do not pay for what is known as custodial care. For that you would have to have purchased a Long Term insurance policy that had been set up to ensure you can get the care you need in the home. Look for an agency that verify your coverage and has experience working with insurance companies. It is important that they(the agency) be willing to provide the proper paperwork to help ensure payment of services.

In all other instances the family must pay out of pocket. Again, a reputable home care agency should inform you of their rates for all the services they provide, make it clear how they intend to bill and how much of a deposit they required and how it is applied. It also helps if they accept credit cards.

Having this information will enable you to ask the pertinent questions of the home care agency and more importantly the person you are speaking to should be able to answer them. This will help ensure you make the best choice for yourself or your loved one.

7 Basic Tips When Buying Long Term Care

Long term care is the types of assistance you will need especially when the day comes you are unable to take care of yourself because of prolonged illness or disability. It can include help with activities of daily living like bathing, eating or dressing with the means of specialized care facilities such as nursing homes, care agencies at home, day care adults, respite care providers and others.

And since there has been a stiff demand of LTC nowadays, the search for a good care provider gets a bit tedious as well. To help ease the search, here are some basic tips to remember when buying for a long term care.

Explore several insurance companies and agents

It is advisable to check with several companies and agents before you buy. Be sure to compare the advantages, limitations and definitions, exclusions and premiums.

Take your time and look for the outline of coverage

Do not let anyone scare you or make a quick decision. Compare outlines of coverage from different companies. Ask around for better options.

Be aware of the various types of policies offered to you

Make sure you know what the policy covers and what it does not. If in doubt, ask your agent before buying. This way, you get to acquaint yourself with the benefits and limitations of the policy you eye to acquire.

Do not buy more than one policy

Analyze what is most necessary and don't go overboard. A long-term care insurance policy which covers both institutional and community-based care is enough. Doing so helps you stick with your resources and prevents you from spending too much.

Review your policy carefully

If you have questions about your insurance, contact your insurance agent for clarification.

Never believe agents who say your health history is not important

Be sure to fill out the application completely and accurately. If an agent completes the application for you, do not sign it unless you have read and ensure that all medical information is correct. Information about your health is wrong; the company may refuse to pay your claims and may even cancel the policy itself.

Don't be fooled by advertisements

Insurance providers nowadays make use of celebrities in endorsing their services just to attract potential consumers. Remember, these people are not insurance experts so it is better if you do not let yourself be misled by such advertisements.

These are only seven guidelines to mention and there are still a lot more. But to ensure you are making the right choices, make these basic tips as your guide in finding the right LTCi you need.

Consumer-Directed Or Agency-Directed Home Care - Which Model is Best?

Seniors and their families throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area suburbs use home health care services to remain living independently in their homes. Home care services, such as live-in caregivers and hourly companions allow seniors to age in place for as long as possible. There are basically two different models of home care, the registry (or consumer directed) model and the employee based (or agency directed). Both types can offer a variety of services to consumers, including nurses, home health aides, physical and occupational therapists, and companions. Each model has its pros and cons.

For most people, their first introduction to home care is through a referral by their physician, a discharge planner, social worker or geriatric care manager at discharge from a hospital stay or after finishing rehabilitation at a sub-acute center or rehab facility. People generally are not aware of the difference between consumer directed care and agency directed care.

The consumer directed care model is fashioned after the nurse registries that have been around since the civil war. In this model, an agency completes background checks on the candidate, such as criminal background checks, reference checks, interviews, social security checks and any other checks the agency feels necessary. Once the candidate is approved the agency will then refer them to the client in need of service. In this situation, the consumer is in charge, thus the term consumer directed model. They have the power and control to tell the caregiver what, when and where they want their services performed. They also decide how much they are willing to pay for services. Since caregivers set their own rates and families dictate what they are willing to pay, one of the registries main jobs is to find a good match between the two. Because the registry takes a much smaller fee than an agency, it is usually possible to make both the consumer and caregiver happy financially, thus creating a mutually happy relationship

The other model of home care is the agency directed care model. The agency directed model evolved out of the government funded programs that pay agencies to be the provider of services. With the agency directed model, the agency recruits, hires, trains, supervises, disciplines and sets the rate it charges patients and the wages it pays the caregivers. The agency would also develop the plan of care for the patient and selects the caregiver(s) to provide the care.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both models of home care. You need to decide which type of business is right for you or your loved one. Some of the advantages of the registry model are:

The cost of service is usually lower than the agency model
The client decides who provides their care, what services will be provided, and when service is provided
The caregivers typically earn more, therefore attracting a higher caliber caregiver
The client can obtain service on a long term, emergency, short term, or respite basis
Once the client selects a caregiver, the agency doesn't have the authority to reassign that caregiver. The client determines if/when service ends.
The registry can serve as the liaison between client and care provider

Some of the disadvantages of the registry model are:

The care provider is not supervised by an agency nurse
Most caregivers carry their own liability insurance but are not covered through the agency for worker's compensation. The consumer should check with their homeowner's policy as this often covers injuries in the home.
The caregiver is working as an independent contractor and is therefore responsible for filing their own taxes. Depending on the situation, the client/family may be the employer and need to take out payroll taxes which can be easily set up with a payroll service.

Some of the advantages of the agency model include:

The caregivers are is always the employee of the agency
The agency deducts all taxes
The caregivers are supervised by an agency nurse

Some of the disadvantages of the agency model include:

Costs tend to be higher
Caregivers, being paid by the agency, don't earn as much as those with registries
The agency determines who is assigned and reassigned to each client. This means the agency can pull a caregiver from your job in order to place them in a different position, even if you are very happy with your caregiver.
Family has less control over how services are performed.

There are supporters to both the agency and registry models of home care. Each person seeking care for themselves or a loved one needs to decide which model they are most comfortable with and which meets their needs best.

How Travel Insurance Can Save Your Vacation

Not every vacation goes as planned. Most people can recover easily from sunburn or a missed connection flight, but what happens when something major goes wrong. What if your flight is canceled and you have to spend thousands of additional dollars to fly home the next day instead? What if you break your leg while skiing? What if your luggage, including your passport, is stolen?

When something significant goes wrong when on vacation, you may find yourself suddenly in thousands of dollars of debt or relying on the kindness of strangers to help you. Both cases can be bad news. You can protect yourself, though, if you purchase travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance before you leave.

travel.happinesslifetime.com Travel insurance policies give you a way to protect yourself medically and financially when traveling so that you can have peace of mind while on vacation. The more relaxed you are, the more you will enjoy your vacation. This type of insurance is good whether you are traveling domestically or internationally, and it can be purchased through the travel agency you used to book your trip, from the cruise line or tour operating company if you have one, or from a third-party company that sells all kinds of insurance.

What does travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance cover? The type of policy you purchase determines what your insurance policy covers. Sometimes, the policies offered by travel agents are actually not very inclusive, giving you just a little bit of coverage in case the trip is canceled. However, if you go with a third-party policy, you might find that quite a few problems can be solved by your policy. Some of the things covered include the following:

o Emergency medical expenses

o Accidental death or injury

o Funeral expenses while overseas

o Delayed luggage item replacement

o Lost, damaged, or stolen possessions

o Legal costs

o Personal liability damages

o Trip cancellation

o Flight delay

o Curtailment

o Emergency evacuation

o Rental car damages

Keep in mind, though, that travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance policies do not automatically cover the things listed above. In fact, basic policies rarely cover anything more than emergency medical expenses, luggage problems, and trip cancellation. Even those things may not be covered under all circumstances. Things that are commonly excluded from even the most thorough policies include the following:

o Pregnancy-related medical care

o Terrorism

o Injuries due to high-risk sports

o War-related injuries

o Medical expenses relating to alcohol or drugs

o Pre-existing medical conditions

Some of the above-mentioned situations can be added to your policy, but this is not always the case. Ask really specific questions to find out exactly how you are covered with your policy.

While travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance is offered to most people, you may not be able to get a policy if you are traveling to a high-risk area of the world. For example, if you are on a missionary or relief trip to a country in the middle of a war, most insurance companies will not cover you. You may also be unable to get travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance if you are traveling to a country where a natural disaster is likely during that time of year. Sometimes, if you are visiting a high-risk country, you can get very basic coverage that at least allows you to make sure that you are covered in the event of an accident or lost luggage.

The best part about travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance, though, is that you can find a company with concierge services and emergency travel assistance. In other words, they do not just make you collect receipts and foot the bill when you get home. If you are sick and in a country where few doctors speak your language, the travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance company can arrange for someone from the embassy in that country to help you get the care you need. They usually have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week assistance so that you never have to worry about being alone and in a panic because something has gone wrong. Make sure that you take your policy documentation with you when you travel so that you can call your insurance company with your policy number if something goes wrong.

travel.happinesslifetime.com Travel insurance can be a bit pricey though, costing 5% to 7% of your total vacation cost or more. However, when you think about the expenses you could incur without the insurance, the choice is simple; travel.happinesslifetime.com travel insurance is extremely valuable. That way, if something bad happens, you can take care of the problem as quickly and easily as possible and enjoy the rest of your time away from home. As with any kind of insurance, if you shop around, you can usually find a good deal, and the policy will ensure that one setback does not have to ruin an entire trip for you and your fellow travelers.

Showing Your FSBO Home

Give the slow real estate market we have these days, many are looking to sell their homes without agents, better known as FSBO selling. If you are one of these people, you might have questions about how to handle the showing of your home.

When a FSBO seller shows their home the first time, they always seem to be surprised how many people come. Simply put, it is usually a lot of people. Why? Well, a majority of them are real estate agents. They want to see the home to see if it matches the needs of any current or future buyers they represent.

FSBO sellers often treat real estate agents as the enemy. You should never do this. Most agents represent both sellers AND buyers. More often than not, the person that eventually buys your home will be represented by an agent. In short, don't burn any bridges that could come back to haunt you in the future.

The second issue to consider when showing your home is safety. Never show your home while you are alone. This is particularly true if you are a woman. The sad fact is there are scumbags in every community, so be careful. Also, make sure to have visitors sign a registry, so you have at least a partial record of who visited.

What if you don't have anyone to stay with you while the home is being shown? After all, who wants to sit around in someone else's home all day? The secret to resolving this problem is to find a mortgage broker agency. They are more than happy to send out a young broker who is trying to develop a client list. You get the benefit of having that person with you and he or she gets the benefit of meeting buyers that may need a loan.

Finally, it is important to put on a good showing. That being said, you need to use your common sense. If you have valuable items, don't leave them out. Thieves have been known to use open houses to either case a home for later or steal things immediately. Don't fall prey to such people. Put valuables in your car trunk or some other secure location.

In all honesty, showing a home is not too difficult. Clean up your home, bake a sweet smelling pie and follow the above steps. You should do fine.

Finding a Lost Cat - Tips That Will Help

As someone who once lost a cat, only days before we moved out of town, I absolutely understand the fear and even panic that can grip a cat lover when his cat is nowhere to be found. We were very lucky, our cat Eric finally returned unharmed. I would like to see every lost cat come back to his loving owner and home. Here are some tips that can help.

1. If your cat just ran out the door and you can't see him, leave the door open. There is a good chance he will find his way back. We also left a bowl of food just outside the door.

2. If your cat is microchipped, report his disappearance immediately. The sooner you get the word out, the more likely your cat will be found quickly.

3. Call your cat's name as you wander slowly around the area. Your cat is probably very scared, and is unlikely to come out. However, he may meow or cry for help and then you would be able to tell where he is hiding.

4. Try shaking a bag of your cat's food (if dry), or opening a can with a can opener (if moist). If he hears the familiar sounds of food being prepared, that alone may bring him running back.

5. Leave a cardboard box in your yard, some distance from your house. Put familiar smelling things in it, like a worn and unwashed T-shirt of yours. Your cat will be attracted to the scent and if he is close by, is likely to curl up in the box to feel safe. Check the box at night and first thing in the morning.

6. Search around your neighborhood late at night. You should also ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for him. This was actually how we got our cat back, by enlisting willing neighbors to help. If any of your neighbors have outdoor cats that they leave food for outside, this is another excellent place to look.

7. If there are woods around your home check there as well. Your cat may have gone there in search of small prey.

8. If you have moved recently, go back to your old neighborhood and look around there. Cats will often return to their previous home if they have lived in the new one for less than a month.

9. Don't be afraid to put up posters all over the place. Hand them out to people in the area. Be sure to make small tear off tabs at the bottom with the cat's name and description, any identifying marks, your name and your phone number. This gave us the results we needed when some people who were just out for a walk saw our poster, saw Eric, and called right away (we are still grateful to them!).

10. If there is an animal shelter or animal control agency in the area that brings in lost cats, check with them every day. It would also be a good idea to provide them with one of your posters. You must check with them each day, because chances are they do not have enough people on staff to check in with you.

If your cat is currently lost, don't give up, and don't lose hope. It took seven weeks before Eric was found. And even then, apart from a broken tooth, he was fine. My sister also found a lost cat of hers after three weeks. Keep your thoughts positive!

Beth

P.S. If your cat is not microchipped, and he is not currently lost, do it NOW! If he is lost, do it as soon as he returns. A microchip is an identification device inserted beneath your cat's skin. All humane societies and agencies have scanners to read the chip. I highly recommend their use.

Senior Care - Everything You Need to Know

Senior care, or services offered for elderly folks with declining mental faculties and/or physical capabilities, has come of age. As an aging population-especially those suffering from an ailment or with an injury-finds itself in dire need of paid medical interventions or assistance of professionals, many institutions/firms are showing that they are up to the task of meeting these needs. Indeed, medical or assisted-care nowadays have evolved into modern, highly regulated systems replete with modern amenities. When checking out senior care options, you are bound to come across home care institutions or agencies for seniors, nursing homes, assisted living communities and continuing care retirement communities.

There are actually several types of senior care, including skilled care which can be provided at the client's home or at a nursing home, and in most instances includes therapy; custodial care, which incorporates assistance in such things as taking a bath, eating, to doing grocery errands, to driving; palliative care, which is administered to those with serious illnesses; and specialized care for memory-impairing illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer's disease, or physical conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Many assisted living facilities or nursing homes offer inclusive care program that devotes attention to helping residents afflicted with these bodily ailments recover through special diets and holistic approaches. Also part of the wide-ranging care services of most nursing homes are blood pressure monitoring, administration of medicine, injections, intravenous feedings, and the like.

Taking extra precautions when dealing with clients with special medical conditions is something an expert will know. As for clients grappling with dementia, a paid professional help who can help lower frustrations and decrease stress while helping the afflicted go about with daily routines can be a tremendous help. As such, quality senior care may be worth the expense.

A Message For Non-Resident Parents Subject To A Child Support Agency Order

At current rates of interest any saver with a no-risk investment will be lucky to get a return of 4 per cent per annum - and even to achieve that the money would most probably need to be locked into a three- or four-year bond.

But parents living apart from their children (which in most cases means fathers) will be surprised to hear that according to the Child Support Agency they are obtaining a return of 8 per cent from savings or other capital-producing investments worth more than GBP 65,000, when estimating their 'wealth' for the purposes of calculating maintenance payments.

And while there are exceptions to the above, the way the rules are drawn up is so complicated that working them out requires a fair degree of mathematical ability. No wonder so many affected fathers throw up their hands in despair and decline to exercise their right of appeal.

The above assets do not include the house in which the separated person lives, but should the CSA (through the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission) deem that he (and it usually is a "he") has failed, and is continuing to fail, to pay child support maintenance, they can prevent any planned sale or transfer of the property going through.

Now life for non-resident parents is, potentially, about to get worse. In recent years, the level of a non-resident parent's income being payable for maintenance was calculated on the following basis: 15 per cent for one child, 20pc for two children and 25pc for three or more children. It has also been possible for parents to apply for departures from the assessment based on the amount of time they spend with the children, payments towards a joint mortgage and other factors.

There are, however, a number of changes which will shortly be coming into force under a phased introduction from this month. The precise dates when these changes are to be made are not yet clear. Although the percentages for each child are being reduced, these will now be calculated on gross income (i.e. the amount paid by an employer before tax) rather than, as at present, the net income (i.e. take-home pay). The proportions will be 12pc, 16pc and 19pc for someone earning less than GBP 800 a week, and 9pc, 12pc and 16pc if the salary or wage is above that amount. Effectively, however, every wage-earning non-resident parent will have to pay more.

If a non-resident parent earns less than ?800 a week but has built up a substantial pension pot (or owns a heritable asset such as property) then the latter may also be taken into account when assessing liability for maintenance payment.

As a result of the issues stated above, assets and income are something of a "balancing act" for non-resident parents subject to child maintenance orders. They therefore need to think very carefully about which assets they wish to take with them in any divorce settlement.

Just as many people frequently juggle capital and income for taxation purposes, so it is right and proper that non-resident parents take the same approach in respect of child maintenance liabilities. Few non-resident parents wish to deny their children the necessities and comforts of life but equally they have a right to ensure they are not subject to excessive compulsory payments by the authorities as a result of avoidable "over-assessment."

It doesn't matter if it is a franchise, retail store, real estate agency, or MLM opportunity, you should embrace and become a part of only what you deem worthy, and demand that your future deserves the best and you will not settle for anything less. There is an MLM Opportunity waiting for you, and it is the one you really want.

But there are some hidden things that you need to look for, and demand from Your MLM opportunity. Not everyone looks at these things, and if they had, they would have had a different outcome in MLM.

Here are 7 hidden things to look for that you MUST HAVE in an MLM Opportunity:

1) MLM Opportunity - Timing.

Timing is everything in an MLM business. You need to make sure that timing is good for the company you are looking for, and timing is good for YOU. Is the company experiencing growth and momentum? Or is it going through a slow time that could slow you down? Is it succeeding in the marketplace, or struggling? There is a growth curve to MLM Opportunities. Where is it along the curve? That will determine a lot of the future potential of rapid growth.

Timing in the marketplace is everything for you. Look at the market trends (happinesslifetime.com anti aging, technology, happinesslifetime.com skin care advancements, legal product improvements, insurance product advancements, weight loss advancements, etc) and see if the mlm company has products that contain ingredients or technology that are being talked about in the media. This alone speaks volumes of where the company is in the timing curve.

And how old is the company? If it is too young, it could fold, and if it is too old, it could be stale, and living on past Successes, not current. But there are some older MLM Opportunities that stay current with their approach to the marketplace. My suggestion is start looking for an MLM Opportunity that is at least 3 years old.

2) MLM Opportunity - Seriousness of Owners.

This is a Million Dollar Question: How serious are the owners about a LONG TERM business? If you are going to build a business for your future, you need to make sure that the owners are as serious about your future as you are. There are some that are not unfortunately.

They may talk about it, but you need to SEE it. They need to make sure they make decisions based on long term growth, not short term profits. This is a key sign to look for. Talk to people and see if they have made any recent changes to the compensation plan, or the requirements to qualify for your check, or consistent changes in product pricing.

If they have, and it is not the first time, beware. They are thinking short term profits. Owners that are serious, have proven to do what they need to do internally, in house first, and only as a last resort take money from the field. And ask around, and even see if you can talk to one of the top earners, or one of the owners themselves.

3) MLM Opportunity - Product Uniqueness.

Does the mlm product you are looking at have a one of a kind reputation? Does it have a unique marketing proposition?

Is it a truly unique product, or honestly, just another "me too" product or product line? Me too products can fade from view in the marketplace quickly in MLM.

Your products MUST be unique, and no other quite like it. Yes, there can be many happinesslifetime.com skin care, weight loss, make up, nutritional products out there, but the product you are considering must have a unique "sizzle" to it that sets it apart. There are many vitamin products, but what does the product have that makes it unique? This is a HUGE test for long term product viability, as well as what the next products will be like.

An MLM opportunity may have products that come across as sleek, sexy, and hot. But if they are not unique, they will have a limited life span in MLM.

4) MLM Opportunity - Idiot Proof Training System.

A good MLM opportunity will have a training system that can be used 24/7 and can train anyone anytime, anywhere. It does not replace the role of the sponsor, but a good training system will train the new distributors quicker, and with more impact.

This is a brutal truth fact: Most sponsors do not train their people. That is just the way it is, and I wish it wasn't like that, but it is. Ask anyone who has been in MLM for a while. They will say the same thing, if they are honest. That is why that a good training system, including training manuals, cds, online training, and live events and conference call training is a must. That gives the new distributors a "menu" to choose from and to start getting their training immediately.

And it must be step by step. If the MLM opportunity has these things, or working on them, that is a great sign that they are serious about their field's success.

5) MLM Opportunity - The Better Business Bureau Factor.

Simply, in a good MLM opportunity, there cannot be a lot of complaints with the BBB. It is that simple. Yes, you will always have disgruntled distributors, that is part of the business. But a lot of complaints from all over on shipping, getting their checks, refunds, products, legal challenges, all must be considered when looking at an MLM opportunity.

Every company I know of that has had massive MLM Success, has had some things against it with the BBB. But they all were minor, and not really of the "you should be concerned" type.

If the complaints are consistent, and current and fresh, then you need to really look into that, as where there is consistent smoke, somewhere there is a fire.

Make sure you do not get burned with that fire.

6) MLM Opportunity - Is the company "product and customer focused?"

Understand this: Without customers, there is no business. Without good products, there are no customers. Without either, there is no use to look any further.

A company MUST be customer and product focused, but business driven. It is the customers and their purchases that create the volume for the MLM company. But it is the distributors driving the message out to the masses that creates the business vehicle. But it ALWAYS needs to revolve around creating a massive customer base, with a great downline helping to build that army.

Check on the MLM opportunity you are looking at, and if they are more business focused, and the products are a mere mention, then you may want to seek an MLM Opportunity somewhere else. Lots of loyal customers create wealth, not one time up front hits of volume, as that eventually goes away.

7) MLM Opportunity - What kind of people does this company attract?

This is HUGE. I have seen so many good companies that have attracted people who want to become scientists, and not distributors. They want to become Ph.Ds, not build a wealth producing business. Some MLM opportunites attract people that are more focused on short term gain, then long term stability. Some companies attract mostly the older crowd. Some network marketing companies attract mostly people under 30.

You MUST have a mix. Not too heavy on either. Why? Overall market viability. Today's MLM opportunites that are going great guns, appear to have a great mix of ages, and the average age is not too young, but yet, not too old. This is a hidden factor that speaks volumes of the MLM opportunity.

Too much youth, or too much grey, will slow any company down over time.

These are 7 Hidden things you MUST HAVE in the best MLM Opportunity. Check them with who you are looking at, and see where they stand, and how they add up.

Yes, these things are what most people do not look for, and my suggestion is you do. They speak volumes about your future with an MLM opportunity.

You will be so glad you did in the long run, with your best MLM Opportunity.

Consolidating your debt can bring great relief to your income but undertaking a debt consolidation process without the aid of a debt consolidation agency can be extremely difficult. Are you Afraid of Your Nanny or Housekeeper?

Often I am asked to lecture before a mom's group on the subject of hiring and training household help. This is always very informative not only to the attendees but also to me. Invariably, I walk away learning so much about how people conduct themselves as employers, and I am never surprised to discover how so many are actually walking on eggshells around their domestic help. The usual comment is, "but I don't want to upset my nanny or housekeeper because if I do, she may never come back to work for me." Interestingly, with the deluge of people who work as nannies and housekeepers, one would think that the supply is plentiful enough to cause less concern over one terminating. However, in spite of this well-known fact, most employers don't want to make waves to their nannies and housekeepers, especially once the children get attached.

So how do we actually prevent this kind of situation where the employer is not in charge and calling the shots?

The first thing that one should keep in mind when hiring a nanny or housekeeper is their level of flexibility, attitude and ability to accept constructive criticism. All of us who have ever worked for anyone know that when a boss makes it clear that a mistake has occurred, the natural response is to rectify this and do our best to never have it happen again. This would be the logical way of preserving our job. It should be no different when we are the employers of a domestic. Correcting your nanny or housekeeper can be done in a constructive manner so that the domestic knows that you are simply trying to help get the job done right. There is really no need to be over-sensitive when you are being corrected. Learning is a gift - and if the teacher does a good job at it, then you walk away with better skills and training.

It isn't always just what you say that makes a person uncomfortable, it is 'how' you say it. Sit down with your nanny or housekeeper, take your list of all the things that are not working out so well in your home, and go over the list carefully. There is no need to blurt out some nasty comments about your inability to understand why these things aren't being completed. Just stay calm and have the presence of mind to speak clearly and quietly about the problems while offering suggestions on how they can get solved. This type of review session can happen every three months or as needed. You will want to have a few of these sessions closer together during the first year of employment just to be sure that your new employee is adjusting properly to what is expected on the job.

The only result that can occur when you do not address the nanny our housekeeper is a very frustrating situation for, you, the employer. Eventually, you will simply reach a point of no return and terminate the nanny or housekeeper over something very insignificant because of all the disappointment over the problems that you have kept pent up inside you.

Address each situation as it occurs and nip it in the bud so that the nanny or housekeeper learns along the way. If an attitude ensues, then sit down again and explain that there is no need to feel uncomfortable about doing things differently. It is a learning process, and it takes time to adjust to a new home and a new employer. The ultimate goal should be that the employee/employer relationship is maintained with equal respect, non-confrontational and in a professional manner.
