When Your Home Biz Booms - Building a Home Based Business

Is that little corner in the spare room/garage/bedroom becoming filled with papers, important documents or contacts that need to be filed away in a Rolodex and who knows what else? Have your pets used your "office" as a hiding spot? Or worse, have you lost or misplaced information that could have been beneficial to your business? If you answered "yes" to even one of the above questions, then it is time for you to consider expanding your home business.

How to go about this, you may ask? The first thing is to assess where the problems may lie. Do you need a more functional calendar (or utilize a calendaring system) to help keep up with dates? Are you misplacing important paperwork? Is your physical space no longer comfortable for equipment, furnishings, supplies, etc? Once you pinpoint the issues, then a reasonable resolution will seem less of a challenge.

Now you may have received those nice, colorful catalogs from your neighborhood office supply and equipment chain in the mail and said 'I can't afford that!' Expanding home business does not mean that showroom perfect results are necessary to be functional. Sometimes recycled furniture intended for other parts of the home may do the trick or your neighborhood discount store may have some items that cost less than regular retail.

Sometimes the same rules can be applied to technology. Equipment like fax machines, phones, and printers may not cost a lot by itself but can add up when trying replace all at once while maintaining regular (and unpredicted) expenses. Check out the online classifieds or the Sunday paper for going-out-of business sales. Network with others who may know of local companies that are willing to give away office equipment (and sometime furniture) but do not want it publicly known. Warehouse liquidation centers are good if you do not mind being in space not meant to be glamorous.

If you need outside help, then this is where you may really want to keep it local - as in you may want to ask family or friends if they or someone they know may want to make an extra few dollars. An expanding home business may not be the place to give a stranger access to your personal information. Though some employment agencies screen applicants thoroughly for bonding purposes, this is a move that should be assessed carefully before sparing any unneccesary expense.

One concept that is becoming very popular is the business incubator. These are usually a large office space, where equipment, computers and sometimes clerical assistance are shared between many small business owners who have too little space at their residence but not enough resources for their own office suite.

Having an expanding home business is very exciting because it means that a companies' growth was based on your own hard work and concepts. Keep in mind that making an upgrade should help in running a business and not go into the red.
