In speaking with a majority of couples seeking to adopt a child, it's amazing to me how many are willing to try international adoption. According to the U.S. State Department, China has been the top choice as a source of adopted children for American couples and Beijing reports show that in the last decade 4/5 of their inter-country adoptions have gone to U.S. families. Couples disappointed with adoption procedures in the U.S. find they also run into frustrating obstacles with overseas adoptions. Even after doing initial research and learning of the many obstacles involved with adopting abroad, many U.S. couples still seem to favor China child adoptions.

The KGB of Our Credit System

Well, we have been indoctrinated, vaccinated, hyperventilated, isolated, inoculated and just about every reason "why" the credit system is a mess by everyone from the top to the bottom. All fingers are pointing at "bad mortgages" Bull crap! Plain and simple. Do you think for a cotton pickin minute that all of a sudden people with bad credit or loans made to people with weak credit is some "brand new baby".

The mortgage industry is partly to blame for sure. Greedy lenders, investors and brokers have all pulled their chair up the to "buffet table" of profits and helped themselves. Now, prior to these "portfolio loans" we relied mostly on FHA, GI, Fannie Mae and conforming loans.

A lot of people bought a home using the FHA guidelines. The credit criteria was relaxed and folks with credit issues were given a chance to own a home and pay competitive rates. Yup, if you had some minor credit issues, you were given some leeway to explain them and if you had a job, paid your bills on time for one year and proved to the underwriters that you deserved a home, by golly, you got a mortgage. Have these folks lost their homes? Not in a long shot. WHY NOT? Because the FHA fully understood credit issues and produced a credit guideline that enabled these folks to qualify.

But, what really has happened stems from a few years back. I mentioned in one of my other articles the "rule of 72". I guess a lot of folks just didn't get it or just didn't care. But lets get on with the business at hand. When I say we are faced with the likeness of the notorious KGB in our system, I am speaking directly about the credit reporting agencies.

I don't care what you think or what you say, facts are facts and until the politicians quit fighting for turf and handouts and pay attention to what is happening, we will be facing this credit crisis for a long, long time.

Why do I say this? Well, read very carefully. The credit reporting agencies have more power than the Federal Reserve. If you don't believe me, take a close look at them. They are "for profit" companies owned by stockholders for profits. In fact, Experian is owned by a group from the UK. Here is where there power affects you and I and we are helpless to do anything about it.

You see, as a consumer, you do not own the data on your credit report. They own it. They have gathered up your paying history and sell it to anyone that wants to pay them for it. So, when you go into the local TV store, the manager automatically pulls your credit. It costs him anywhere from $8.00 to $16.00. Of the millions of people in the US. How many credit reports are pulled daily? Mind boggling. Now, who are the agency customers? NOT YOU and NOT ME.

The customers of the agencies are the creditors. So, lets be logical, when anyone disputes an entry on their credit report, who do you think that the credit bureau will favor? Not you for sure. You are nothing to them but a statistic that makes them money. Okay, got the picture? Now lets really get "down and dirty". How about the hundreds of credit card companies that use the information from the credit bureaus? Do you think that it would be reasonable to assume that these companies are happy making 8% on loans? Come on, get real. These companies are geared to make over 24% on their money plus the extras that they charge for being late and over the limit.

Here is a new twist. Try and pay your monthly bill on the telephone and they will charge you an extra $5 - $10 bucks for that. I went ballistic with a clerk when she told me that I would have to pay $10 for the privilege of paying by phone. I said "why in the sam hell would I pay you for the privilege of paying you? Ludicrous, but they get away with it.

Now that you can see the "pigs cavorting around the trough" of extra costs and filling their plates, you begin to understand what this whole picture is about. There are NO CREDIT COPS out there to protect us. Sure, the FTC occasionally metes out a fine when it is politically proper and the public has screamed enough.

Now when the bottom feeders get 24% and more in interest, do you think for one minute they care about you or me? They only care about the bottom line. But, these "thieves" need a partner to guarantee that your credit stays in the pits. Who is that partner? Well it's Equifax, Experian and Transunion. You see, in today's real world there are more credit reports with errors than there are accurate credit reports.

Sure, we have laws that says "the bureaus MUST report 100% accuracy" or else? Or else, WHAT. NOTHING, NADA, ZILTCH. When they report erroneous information you play "hell" trying to get it straightened out. I certainly do not want to write a book on this subject, but that could naturally follow. The truth of the matter is this. I guess we call it the "food chain" for profits.

Harry and Jane use their credit card and go over the limit. Not a big deal. But wait. Lets see how this "credit cancer" spreads. First of all, they are hit with an over the limit fee. Secondly their credit scores drop because of the fact that they are over the limit. Who knows this? You didn't but you do now. With this lower credit score, the other credit card companies have their "sniffers" working and they raise the interest rates on their credit cards, simply because you "might" have a problem. Is that justice? Not at all, but they get away with it.

So, Harry and Jane now see their interest rates climb on their credit cards, their payments increase and something has to give. You cannot get "blood out of a turnip". So, they miss a payment or are late because the paycheck was late or he missed a couple of days of work. Doesn't matter the reason, but their personal "pristine" credit is heading for the bottom of the pile.

Can they do something about it? Well, because they were over the limit is in itself not a crime. BUT, here is where the credit reporting agencies help the creditors.

When an account is placed for collection or charged off, the furnisher of information MUST provide the bureau with the commencement of the initial delinquency. BUT, they rarely do. On most credit reports over 90% have the same error. You cannot determine when the seven year period of reporting derogatory information begins. THIS IS WHAT KEEPS YOU IN CREDIT PRISON.

I've been in a lot of agencies and it is almost laughable what some people will send to agents trying to drum up business. All one has to do is watch the new season of American Idol to witness how people throw half hearted attempts at getting to the big leagues. At times all of us are guilty of it. I noticed a while back that I myself had gotten "a little lazy" in the audition process. After 10 years, you tend to develop a routine where by you do everything the same. I sat back and took a good look at how I was physically positioned when submitting online auditions. There I was at the mixing console in the studio, sitting in front of the mic I usually use for coaching, talkback, ISDN and booth recording sessions.

The mic stand as it turns out was set to low, I was slumped over in my chair, leaning to the right a little, and doing little more than muttering my way through the auditions. Then with little concern, I would do some basic editing to the file and ship it off. I had over time, ceased putting the right amount of effort into the auditions. I was still doing a good job. Question is, was I doing the best job I could. The answer was no. I could certainly do a lot better. I began by rearranging the mic so I had to stand up to use it. No more of this sitting down and firing them off like they didn't matter. I stand up for all of the other production I do, why shouldn't I put just as much effort into the auditions? That's a pretty easy one to answer... Auditioning is tiresome and boring. The only thing that makes it tolerable is the idea you might land something out of the deal. And your spirit sure gets renewed every time you do.

Auditioning is also one of those things we have to do in order to get any work, so after a while it becomes like taking out the trash. If we don't do it no one will - and as long as no one is watching, we can let it pile up for a while. What happens after it sits there for a while? It starts to stink. Much the same way our auditions do after we begin to see them as a chore, or something "that is beneath us" because we have been doing this long enough and we know what we are doing.

What a poor attitude to have. Each audition is a new opportunity to be reborn. We can get up, sit up straight, (or in my case stand up) and go after the new job lead with some real gusto. I have gotten some auditions into the studio in the past month or so where you can tell that the talent just didn't care, or thought the job was beneath them for some reason. So why even bother applying? If you aren't going to give it your all, why even take the time? Some of these auditions were mixed up with younger talents that were trying way too hard to sound "Cool".

You can hear it in every aspect of the audio they sent over. Straining and pushing themselves to sound like who knows what. The one thing they accomplish is sounding like anyone but themselves. But compared to the experienced talent that "Phoned In" their read, the two demos sound strikingly familiar to one another. In what way you ask? They just weren't right. Out of the 100 or so submissions I received, almost half of them hit the round file (trash) due to audio quality alone. If they were sending junk like that out in an attempt to get a gig, what nightmares would I have to deal with if I had them produce the audio in their own studio? Of the other 60% or so, some of them nailed it. Just plain old nailed it. They got the read, they got the voice, and they got the interpretation. It made it hard to decide who to pick.

Then there were the Shatners of the bunch - That is the self deprecating Shatner I speak of. They just pushed too hard, or tried to do something that was totally out of their range or experimental. Auditions should never be "Experimental". At times it was just a little issue that could be overlooked if there wasn't anyone else to choose from, but in this case there were other talents that hit the nail on the head. Other times it was glaring; some talents chose to put their own words into the script because they didn't like the way it was written, then there were the English professors who took it upon themselves to correct us as if we were the writers of the copy. I mean they actually took time at the beginning of their read to say, "Oh, and by the way ______ is not the correct use of the word" or "this part of the script really needs some work." Absolute no-nos. I don't care who you are.. The words on the page are the words the client wants to hear. You will never, ever get hired if you think you can get away with scorning the people who wrote the script. At least we wont hire you. It's not to say if someone had the tact to call on the phone and start with "I have some concerns about the copy." they would be turned away never to hear from us again.

At least then, the producer or client may be willing to listen. Sometimes, talents have pointed out some really good stuff, and they get thanked for it. But anyone who thinks they can stand up on the mountain top like some sort of Shakespearean authority and dictate to clients and producers what is and isn't right has got another thing coming. Hopefully, it's a habit not too many people have.. Needless to say, their demos ended up in the round file too.

There is no one answer that fits every situation. Families are wise to deliberate carefully when deciding how to help their loved ones. There is less potential for difficult gaps in caregiving with more than one person dedicated to the effort. If respect and compassionate collaboration is present in this arrangement, the result may be even stronger bonds among family members, particularly with the loved one requiring care. When the demands of caregiving are shared, they are a lighter load to bear.

Cons: There is the potential for discord among family members who disagree about scheduling, financial or other considerations. Also, there may be push back from some family members who feel that they are either shouldering too much of the responsibility, or not being given enough. Nonetheless, it is likely that the pros of this arrangement far outweigh the cons.

9. On Again/Off Again

This implies situational caregiving that is based on necessity. Family members may volunteer to step in and assist their loved ones only when invited or when their loved ones are obviously struggling to maintain the quality of their lives. Similarly, outside professional assistance may be acquired only as the situation demands.

Pros: If loved ones are in relatively good health and require minimal assistance and supervision, this may be the choice that ensures the most independence and requires the least amount of lifestyle changes. Whatever the motivating factor, choosing to take no action concerning the care of a loved one in need is like abandonment. It is not a sensible choice.

Pros: The only positive impact of taking no action, or even crafting a plan of action, is that it preserves the way of life for family members who are not committed to their loved one's care. There is no apparent positive impact on loved ones in need, unless it motivates them to take action themselves that ensures their well being.

Cons: There are many obvious negative impacts to "doing nothing" about the needs of a loved one. First, this may cause a detrimental condition to escalate and the loved one may experience damage that would have been prevented had action been taken. Then, the message that is communicated to loved ones by family members who take no action is that the family also takes no interest in the welfare of these individuals. Whether or not this is true, choosing to do nothing to help a loved one in need cannot be classified as anything but neglect. This is potentially very painful for the loved one in need. In addition, taking no action solves nothing; it simply delays the inevitable. At some point, family members who are involved in their loved ones lives will be required to make some decisions regarding their care. Sometimes the delay will be the determining factor of whether or not a loved one survives. For anyone who values a relationship with a loved one, the choice to do nothing to address that person's care is a foolish and naive approach.
