Toward a Healthier Home

The idea that one's home can be a healthy or unhealthy place to live is relatively recent. Terms such as "household toxins" and "indoor air pollution" have been coined only within the past decade as the medical and scientific communities have begun recognizing that common household chemicals can have an adverse effect on our health. Most people assume that if a product is on the market, it must be safe. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The fact is that since WWII, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of man-made chemicals we use in our homes. At the same time, there has been an equally dramatic rise in the incidence of certain chronic health problems. Research indicates that it is more than coincidence that the dramatic rise in these various diseases has coincided with the increased use of hazardous, man-made chemicals in the home.

Did you know that the ingredients in many household cleaners, - laundry and dishwashing detergents, glass and tile cleaners, air fresheners, furniture polish, carpet shampoo - have been linked to a number of childhood health disorders, everything from asthma to cancer?

It's true - and unfortunately, very few conventional household cleaners have ever been evaluated for their long-term impact on human and particularly children's health. Untested combinations of chemicals hit the shelves of supermarkets and drugstores with no interference from the government.

Did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency says that the air in our homes is 10 times more toxic than the air outside?

You will also be shocked to learn that formaldehyde (a suspected carcinogen) is a common ingredient in baby shampoo, bubble bath, deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair dye, mouthwash, toothpaste, hair spray and many other personal care items. Another common toxin is chlorine bleach which when combined with hot water emits vapors that are absorbed into our skin and lungs.

The good news is that there is a safer way to keep our homes germ and dirt free - without affecting quality, or spending extra time or money. There's no reason that you as a consumer have to lower your standards or spend extra money to protect your children's health. I am in the business of providing information and assistance for you to change your lives to provide a healthier environment for your family.
