Restaurant Survival Skills - How to Eat Healthy Outside of Your Home

I hope you get a lot of this article and it makes a huge difference for you on your road to better health and achieving your ideal weight.

Here ya go....

There are many people who eat out quite often and rarely make a meal at home because of their busy schedules. I can relate to this fast paced busy lifestyle having lived in Manhattan for 17 years.

So what do you when you eat out at restaurants or someone else's home? The best answer I can give you is the advice I give to myself - Do the best you can with where you are. Just make sure you use the tools I'm going to give you in the next section below to set yourself up for the best health you can.

When eating out, you'll want to choose restaurants carefully as well as what and how you order. Restaurants know or care little about your health. They just want you to have a good experience and be satisfied with the food. Therefore you need to be your own watchdog.

The most important thing when eating out at any restaurant is to avoid margarine, (a hydrogenated oil or trans-fat) and vegetable oils. These oils significantly contribute to inflammation and inflammation is linked to heart disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, fibromyalgia and many other conditions. I must admit, eating out can be a real challenge when it comes to avoiding these oils.

Here's the scoop on most restaurants and vegetable oils.

Almost any restaurant whether it be American, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, etc., is going to use some type of vegetable oil in their cooking and in their food. It'll also be in their salad dressings. The same is true at salad bars that so many people flock to at lunch time for a quick "healthy" meal. Just as bad as the dressings at these salad bars are the potato and macaroni type salads too - they are loaded with vegetable oil (the main ingredient in mayonnaise is soy bean oil.) Some type of vegetable oil is unfortunately in their soups too.

One of the few exceptions of restaurants that use quality oils are Italian restaurants, especially the better ones. Each time I ask, and I almost always do, nearly every time it is extra virgin olive oil they are using.

However, beware because some restaurants will say that they use olive oil when in fact they are really using an "olive oil blend". This is a form of trickery by the food industry and maybe even the restaurant. And because I don't entrust restaurants to look out for my health (my health is my responsibility), I don't mind asking questions when I first visit a place I've never been before.

An "olive oil blend" is a blend of vegetable oils and is usually only about 10% olive oil. How food manufacturers can get away with calling this an "olive oil blend" when olive oil is only a small percentage of the product is beyond me. (You can thank the FDA or the regulatory agency in your country.) So, caveat emptor.

If you feel embarrassed or don't want to ask what oils they're using at restaurants (not everyone is as bold as I am), just assume they're using vegetable oil or margarine/shortening and avoid it. When you order your food, you can ask for your meal steamed with the sauce on the side with no oil. Most restaurants won't have coconut oil, so butter is the next best thing that they'll have readily available. Often, I'll ask for them to use butter instead of vegetable oil (I'll tell them I'm allergic) and almost always they accommodate me.

As you can see, vegetable oils continue to be practically everywhere. Even when you don't know it, they are there. Lastly, look out for these blended oils in supermarkets too and read all food labels carefully. Read the list of ingredients, not just the advertising label on the front of the container. Food product labels are usually there to sell you and not to inform or educate you. Again, caveat emptor.

What Type of Restaurants Are Best to Eat At?

If you're a meat eater, any restaurant that serves wild game of any kind is a good choice. By wild game I mean buffalo, elk, ostrich, venison, quail, etc., as long as it is wild (and not farm raised or fed grains like corn and soy.) They'll probably also have wild salmon, too. Wild salmon has become increasing popular and many restaurants have it on their menu, not just restaurants that serve wild game.

Raw food restaurants are an excellent choice as well. They will use no refined oils, and since they won't be cooking anything there's nothing of real concern. They mostly all use raw organic coconut oil anyway.

Another great choice is organic and vegetarian restaurants. Watch out here as many of these restaurants will use fake or mock foods made of soy to imitate the taste and consistency of meat, chicken, fish, pork, etc. Plus, they'll be clueless about vegetable oils. Please inquire about their use of these oils - soy, corn, canola, etc. and tell them to please steam your food and put the sauce on side, or if that's not possible you can tell them to cook with butter (not margarine) or last, tell them to use very little oil and hope they do.

Your Simple 7 Minute Action Step

Next time you go to a restaurant, experiment with this and ask them to not use any vegetable oils and just use butter or no oil at all. Practice asking for what you want and look out for your health.

I hope you use this information to your benefit. Feel free to share this with your friends and family.

Thanks for your time and I'll talk to you soon,

Dan
