Sandwich Generation - Caring For Your Elderly Parent

Got kids who still need you? A boss who expects you to be on the job? A partner who would like some of your time? And now an aging parent who needs you, too? What do you do? Become a caregiver for your parent? Move mom in with you, or you with her? Or find placement for your parent away from home and family? You have options. But do you know what kind of senior care your parent wants? What do your siblings think? If you haven't yet had those difficult discussions with the family, including your siblings, then now is the time. Talk about it now, before your parent needs elder care, while they are still healthy and active and can express their wishes and make choices. Don't wait until a crisis strikes, your parent is unable to communicate, and you have to make a decision immediately. Many elderly folks want to age in place; smart senior home care planning will allow them to grow old in their own familiar surroundings. Others want social interaction and choose senior residential centers or assisted living facilities, when they need help.

Some seniors make their decisions early, sell their home, and move into a transitional living community where they live in their own cottage or unit, independently. As they decline and need care, they move to the assisted living unit. But these choices are costly and must be made by your parent while they are still independent. If the decision is for mom or dad to age at home, and you are considering being the caregiver, be sure this is a job you want and can do. Think about it carefully. Can you spare the time and energy away from your own family? What if you quit your job? Can you afford to lose your income, healthcare benefits, and pension? Are you a nurturing and patient person? What was your prior relationship with this parent? And, very important: Will you have support and help from your siblings? If you decide this is the job for you, there are many rewards in helping your parent to age with dignity, but be prepared for the challenges. And be sure all other family are involved. They should take turns giving you days off. They can help with paying bills, financial issues, meals, shopping, or taking mom to medical appointments. Siblings who live far away might take over on-line banking services or handle legal matters. If your parent needs care 24/7, then you can't be the sole caregiver. You will need help from other family members or someone trained in eldercare. It is not uncommon for the caregiver of a loved one to pass away first. The stress, energy expended, loss of sleep, and the many other challenges take a tremendous toll, both physically and emotionally.

If, on the other hand, this is not the job for you, there are in-home elder care services. Most senior caregivers do the job because they enjoy elderly people. They have training, experience, and are bonded through the agency.. When contacting an elder care agency, a geriatric care manager will assess your parent's abilities and needs, and the home environment for access and safety. They will make recommendations and give you options. They can take over the total care plan, or they can provide some of the help and support you in providing the rest of the care. Often families will hire help during the day, then provide the needed care at nighttime and on weekends. It's up to you. When the time came to care for my dad, I had no living siblings and no other family members to help. He was not about to leave his home and I had assured him that I would do my best not to place him in a care facility. He lived in a rural community and eldercare agencies could not assure consistent caregivers. I lived 300 miles away and was still working. I could not do the job. We placed ads in community papers, church bulletins, and spread the word. It took a while, but we eventually found a woman who had caregiver experience and dad liked her; he was involved in the interviewing and hiring process. Initially, we only needed her a few hours a day; over time we increased her hours and responsibilities, as his needs required it. I visited often and kept frequent contact with her and Dad, on the phone. You can think smart, plan ahead, and manifest your wishes. Dad lived out his life with dignity, in his own home with care that progressed from just a few hours a day to full time live-in care. He was 92 when he died. I did it; you can to.

I earned my M.A. in occupational therapy at USC, and dedicated my career to working with elderly men and women in rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and private homes. I then cared for my own elderly father as he declined, making modifications and providing care that allowed him to age with dignity in the comfort of his own home.
After his death, I wrote the book, DAD'S HOME ALONE, Caring For Your Elderly Parent, to not only share our journey, but to provide a handbook for others facing the many choices and issues involved in caring for an elderly loved one. The often humorous stories help to exemplify the challenges we all face when caring for our loved ones.

The Pros and Cons of Selling Your Home on Your Own

One of the decisions that needs to be made about selling a home is how you are going to do it. Will you take care of everything on your own or do you want to hire a real estate agency to represent you? More people are leaning towards selling their own home though and that makes sense. Yet it isn't the right decision for everyone. Learning the pros and cons of this option will help you decide which road you should take.

One of the main reasons why people choose to sell their home on their own is to save money. They may find that with the market being tight they aren't going to get what they really want for their home. By not having to pay for the commission of the involvement of a real estate agency they may be able to accept a lower offer. If they owe money on the home then this becomes even more of a battle to keep things in check so that they can get out from under the loan.

However, there is a great deal of paperwork involved with selling a home. When you have a real estate agent on your side they take care of it all for you. Basically you go over it, they answer any questions you may have, and then you sign it if you agree with it. Selling your home on your own means you are responsible for all of the paperwork involved.

You also have to answer questions of potential buyers, schedule appointments to see the home, and take care of anything else that comes up. Even if you have the ability to do all of this, the time involved can be consuming. If you have children to take care of or a job then you may find it hard to sell your home on your own. You simply may run short in the day due to time restraints.

It can be uncomfortable too having to bring strangers into your home when you are the only one there. With a real estate agent there as well it can help to make everyone more comfortable. Let's face it, in our society you just can't be too careful. There are plenty of honest people out there looking for a home. Yet there are also con artists out to take advantage so being on your toes is important.

When you sell your home on your own, you may feel more in control of the process. Not everyone is comfortable working with a real estate agent. It can be one more person to make happy and to have to answer to. When you are on your own though you get to call all the shots. You can accept offers that are different then what you originally would have as well. For example you can give the new buyer possession of the home in a week or two if you want even though closing hasn't yet occurred.

If you aren't confident in your ability to sell your home on your own you don't have to. You may decide that if you don't sell it within six months on your own you will turn to a real estate agency. You may decide it is going to best for your to go that route in the beginning. Your situation is different from that of other people so don't feel forced in to doing what you aren't comfortable with. The goal here is to sell your home so take actions that will help you to achieve it.

Aging in Place - Three Ways to Stay Put Using At Home Senior Care

Getting old is bad enough - who wants to have to leave their home in addition? And being a burden on family members can sometimes be so stressful that the emotional strain of staying at-home may make moving into an assisted-care facility a more attractive option. However, there are several different ways that seniors can age in place and receive in-home senior care and assistance in the privacy and comfort of their own home, as an affordable alternative to facility care.

Non-medical senior care is often much less costly than assisted-care facilities or nursing home care, as not all nurse aides or care providers are trained medical professionals. However, at-home care providers can ensure that all personal needs are met, such as help with grooming, bathing, dressing, and moving around the house, as well as other physical daily tasks such as preparing meals, grocery shopping, and escorting the senior to doctor appointments. In addition, there is a "personal touch" that care providers and nurse aides can give seniors, and a special companionship that they might be lacking otherwise.

If you are considering long-term care for yourself or your loved one, here are some options that can enable you or your loved one to remain at-home, aging in place.

1) Long-term Care (LTC) Insurance

If you have a long-term care (LTC) insurance plan, but decide, "I don't want to leave my home", you most likely can use your long-term care insurance for home care or nurse aides to visit or live in your home. Check with your long-term care insurance provider or find a local home care provider and ask if your insurance will reimburse them for services.

2) Part-time Nurse Aides

If you or your loved one does not require full-time care, an affordable option is to hire a nurse aide or senior care agency. This is often a more affordable option because the care givers provide non-medical care, which can be costly.

3) A Live-in Home Care Companion

If you or your loved one needs 24 hour personal care and attention, finding a live-in senior care companion is often as affordable or less so than assisted-living or nursing care. Instead of paying for medical professionals that are not always needed, care givers can give you or your loved one undivided attention, and depending on the home care agency you select, they can often have a medical professional to call as a back-up, if needed.

The option you select should be based on your specific home care and health-related needs. The burden of getting old is not going to go away, but as long as there are options to remain independent and at-home, the quality of life can be made simpler and better, and that is the best way to enjoy old age.

A Healthy Cash Flow

What is a healthy cash flow?

I have read numerous articles about cash flow over the last few months and to be honest they bore me to tears. They are generally written by ''experts'' or ''accountants'' who think in numbers and that is exactly how they write.

Don't get me wrong, we need accountants and they are a vital part of my life but what is a healthy cash flow from Mr Joe Average's point of view?

To me it is really having enough money in your bank account or in your secret stash that you are not forever worrying about what you can and can't do with your life. That to me seems to be a pretty good definition of cash flow. Having sufficient income to be able to go to the movies, go to the international sporting contests you would like to see, wherever they might be. To be able to do the things you would really like to do!!!

Being able to buy a really nice car and insure it fully comprehensively, parking it in your double garage next to your spouses really nice car, where you are living in relative comfort without the fear of them being damaged, in any form.

A healthy cash flow allows you to travel when you want to, to where you want to, taking with you those you care for and love, if that is your desire.

What if you are single? What does a healthy cash flow mean to a single person these days? When I was single I managed to travel to approximately 15 countries and if I had been able to have sufficient income then I would have seen a lot more than I did and I would have a lot more photos to remember my journeying too.

Today's average backpacker is a pretty intelligent person and they can see a bargain, are pretty sharp in spotting good deals and are discerning of the cheats. The one thing they don't generally have is a healthy cash flow. They have income in their accounts but they have to work where they end up living for a while, so they can make ends meet, without touching their ''travel money.''

If I had found one of the numerous ways to make a steady income, to have a regular dependable cash flow, without working 60 hours a week for it, then my travels would have been absolutely brilliant and extended. How many of you reading this article can relate to this predicament? How many of you have been in the situation of having to go back to work, to work behind a bar, to wait on tables, while everyone else is having a great time?

How many of you have had to take agency jobs that you really didn't want to but you really needed the cash flow, so your savings could be spent on your holiday?

There are many ways today to have a good regular cash flow and this generally comes in the form of residual income, income that keeps coming into your bank account over and over again, for work that you generally have done once. There are many mlm, network marketing and internet marketing companies around but who do you go to?

Which companies are reputable? How many hours a week, per day do you have to work to make residual income, so that you can enjoy the lifestyle you aspire to, so that you have sufficient travel income?

Can I give you some really good advice, advice I give you freely to do with as you choose.

A healthy cash flow is one that is continuous.

A healthy cash flow will come slowly and last for a long time if it is residual.

A healthy cash flow is one that will take away a lot of your every day concerns.

A healthy cash flow will allow you to do things you only ever dreamed of.

A healthy cash flow is one that gives you multiple choices in life.

A healthy cash flow will require you to plan and save and invest wisely.

A healthy cash flow ensures you become rich in soul as you experience more of life.

A healthy cash flow will allow you to see life from a different perspective.

A healthy cash flow is empowering.

A healthy cash flow will bring its own challenges if used unwisely.

A healthy cash flow is going to bring you rewards if used wisely.

A healthy cash flow will allow you to explore life more fully.

I challenge you to explore life from a different angle, think laterally, think from outside the box, think for yourself and ask yourself the one big question...

What could I do with a healthy cash flow?

Are You a Homeowner Facing Tough Times?

We know at times life can be unbearable and unpredictable, especially with economic tough times looming over you. Your day-to-day expenses are on the rise, unexpected changes begin to happen and some how you fall behind on your mortgage payments. Maybe it was due to a job loss, high medical costs, increase utility bills, an unexpected illness or something else. Whatever the reasons, you're just not sure where to turn. Maybe there is a solution--a home affordable loan modification.

In February 2009, President Obama announced the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) to help eligible families modify their mortgages to avoid foreclosure. In order to qualify, the home must be your principal resident and not have changed ownership. To determine if you qualify, contact your mortgage company directly or a US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved housing counseling agency. The housing counseling agency can help you (free of charge ) evaluate your situation, review your income and expenses, so that options are available to you. To speak to a housing counseling agency, call 1-888-995-HOPE (4673) or visit HUD's website at hud.gov hud.gov and click on "resources." If your mortgage company is a HAMP participant, ask them about all of your modification options, follow all instructions and provide the necessary documentation.

NOTE: Please be careful of scams, as there are unscrupulous companies who will claim they can modify your mortgage for a fee. DO NOT pay any fees to help get a loan modification. Seek a HUD approved housing counseling agent at the number above.

Caring For Feral Cats in Your Community

Most cities and towns have some form of animal control in place, usually as a division of the police department. Thus, an animal control officer's boss is usually the chief of police. But police departments typically have less interest in the welfare of animals than in law enforcement related to the more exciting pursuit of human derelicts and dastards.

One officer smiled at me and said he wasn't able to investigate a cruelty case I reported, as he had more urgent business with a burglary at the moment. That's understandable, but this is usually more of a problem in smaller communities because they have less money and resources to cover all the bases. In fact, most of these smaller, local agencies would rather dispose of animal problems... literally... because the paperwork is cumbersome, and "more important" issues must be handled first.

Understanding the link between animal and human violence

Law enforcement officials in many small towns have not grasped the connection between cruelty to animals and to humans. Thus, they are very unlikely to look into animal problems involving mistreatment of pet cats, and much less to strays.

These agencies often view the problem of overpopulation, especially of cats, as a "vermin" problem, best handled by extermination. Thus, cruelty against strays is typically ignored.

Many communities have utilized proven feral cat strategies, but they are almost always organized and managed by private individuals, and then are scoffed at by city officials.

Until authorities actually wake up and get it, it must remain with us, as caring citizens in any town, to deal with these unfortunate cats. It's possible, but isn't always welcome in our own communities. Those residents who hate cats, for instance, will continue to demand a simple trap-and-kill program, often "contributing" to this strategy in their own cruel ways, by placing poison and leg-hold traps in their yards or other locations.

Trap, Neuter, Release

What they never seem to get is that killing has never worked, and never will. The only program that has ever made a truly significant difference is one known as Trap-Neuter-Release, where strays are captured, altered, vaccinated and treated for any medical problems, then released back to their territories if they are healthy, but not adoptable.

Also known as Trap-Neuter-Return, this is the only effective way to humanely handle the problem, since there are not enough homes for them all, and killing only leaves space for new ones to enter the group.

If you are feeding strays, here are some ways to help them:

Set up feeding stations. Make or find small containers to serve as miniature "dog houses" to provide shelter.

Monitor the colony, or group of cats you feed. Don't just toss a bag of food out for them once a week. Keep an eye on them. If you can't trap them, notify someone who can, and get them fixed and "vetted" (treated by a veterinarian).

Find or organize a feral cat club or group so you can help each other to help these poor cats.

Collect any kittens you find, as they may be adoptable if young enough to be tamed. Find a local shelter or rescue group to help with this, if possible.

Find a veterinarian who is willing to participate. Not all of them are interested, so you may need to ask around.

Look for area spay-neuter clinics that offer discounted surgeries.

While shelters and pounds euthanize (kill) between 3 and 4 million cats and dogs every year, no one is counting the number of strays and ferals who are shot, poisoned and starved to death. If we truly have dominion over the animals, people must learn that dominion means responsibility... It's not a license to be cruel.
