The 7 Areas of Marketing Waste - Are You Committing These Marketing Sins?

If you want to reduce waste and grow your business it can be useful to know where to look. Marketing waste is usually most apparent in these 7 key areas:

1. Activity (over production)

2. People (over capacity)

3. Processes (over complication)

4. Waiting (poor communication)

5. Excessive Communication Costs

6. Trial and Error

7. Excessive Lead Costs

1. Activity (over production)

Too many people doing too many different things. Thousands of brochures produced with no clear plan how to get them in the right hands. Twenty different networking meetings on the horizon, with no time to follow up.

Over production and too much activity is usually a symptom of poor planning. You're not quite sure what you aim to achieve, but there is budget (or time) to spend and any marketing activity is seen as good activity.

Performing lots of different marketing activities without first having a clear vision and strategy in place is a massive area of waste. Your business may perform well as a result of so much effort (and cost), but how do you know what is working and what isn't?

Measuring ROI on activity is essential. This will enable you to focus more effectively on the successful activity and completely remove the need for unsuccessful or wasteful marketing approaches to free up capital as profit or to fund other business improvement initiatives.

2. People (over / under capacity)

Too many people involved in the marketing process can also be a big area of waste. In particular, full time marketing managers can waste a lot of time choosing where to spend your money on promotion.

The marketing director or CEO needs to be able to enlist good marketing advice and planning as it is needed and then allow experts outside the company to implement the necessary action. There is no need for an internal marketing manager to oversee this if you use the right marketing consultants. By carefully retaining the services of a marketing consultancy you can gain access to a range of experience that no single individual can ever hope to possess. You can then recruit a more junior but bright person from within your company to liaise with your consultants and yourself.

You can never truly know if your marketing manager is working at full steam and I'm certain that they won't tell you unless they want more budget to spend on the next CV enhancing fad.

If you are a marketing manager reading this, be honest, maybe you should talk to your boss about a more flexible retained position. This way you can look for other contracts and build your exposure to more businesses which will enhance your ability to perform well.

If you're a solo or very small business, then the "people" doing your marketing may be just you and you may be suffering from a serious lack of capacity. There comes a time when your lack of time causes waste for your business and holds you back. You must seriously look at the skills gap and address the needs of your business (and your sanity!).

3. Processes (over complication)

Lean Manufacturing (where we learned our trade) deals with the process of moving an order through your supply chain and to your customer. In this instance we're talking about the marketing process - this deals with acquiring the customer in the first place and how you handle your customers once you have them. For this we use the Lean Marketing Pipeline - would you like a copy? Just send an email to:

To understand your present state you need to map the processes of communication, customer acquisition, customer processing and customer relationships. Then you need to make sure that there are no non-value adding activities. This will enable you to eliminate steps in the process that have literally become bad habits. We have a module called Moments Of Truth in our Toolbooks series, that deals thoroughly with this issue.

Getting your sales and marketing process right will enable you to reduce the cost of gaining new business, dealing with your customers and upselling new services and products.

Other important things to include when refining your processes are measurement tools. Once you begin to measure success against strategic key performance indicators you will have the information to continuously improve and reduce waste even further. If your customer facing processes work well you will also find that customer satisfaction will improve.

4. Waiting (poor communication)

An over hierarchical communication structure can make it very difficult to take action quickly. This lack of flexibility can cause waste in the form of missed opportunities and unnecessary inaction. If the people responsible for implementing marketing for your business are inactive then you are wasting money. We're not just talking about the hierarchy in your business (you may not have one) - we're talking about the hierarchies in your marketing consultancy, web developers or ad agency.

If you see marketing as a fundamental part of your business then waiting is rarely a problem. If the CEO or board view marketing as separate from the business, then lower priority will be given to spending and decision making in this area.

Changing communication policy or empowering people closer to your marketing activity with limited (and accountable) financial independence will help to overcome this problem.

5. Excessive Communication Costs

Traditional methods of communication - mail / fax / phone / in-person are relatively expensive, and though still essential, need to be mixed with other more cost effective methods. The Internet is a powerful way to reduce communication costs, but still far too few businesses embrace it as such.

Let's say that you produce a monthly printed newsletter for your customers. This will involve cost at the following stages: design; copywriting; editing; printing; packing; distribution. Now imagine the same idea using email. The cost areas are: design; copywriting; editing; distribution. Firstly, there are fewer steps (less time) in the email process, but when you look at the steps that are omitted you'll also find that they are the costs that escalate (stamps, envelopes, printing) as you communicate to a growing audience.

How many times do your people get asked the same questions? Every time they answer a frequently asked question they are performing a duty that does not add value but can't be ignored. Simply using your website to provide general advice and FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) could reduce your costs (Freephone support line) and free up your people's time to perform more productive, value added duties.

I'm wondering if... You Know Other People who should be reading this too? So do us all a favour (they get 2 free books - we get a new subscriber - you get to look good) when you Pass On This link... leanmarketing.co.uk leanmarketing.co.uk

6. Trial and Error

Trial and error is the inherent waste involved in all marketing. But simply accepting this fact is not good enough. There are ways to reduce the guesswork as well as reducing the cost of targeting and increasing conversions.

The biggest failing of most traditional marketing promotion is that it relies on interrupting people when they aren't necessarily looking for the product or service you have to offer. Just think what happens when you are watching your favourite TV show; the advertisements are a useful break to make a cup of tea or go to the toilet. They aren't providing something you were actively looking for by watching TV.

Advertisements in glossy magazines interrupt you when you're in the middle of an article. They may improve your awareness of a product or service but you'll rarely welcome the opportunity to read them - you'll ignore them! The bits of paper and advertisements that are shoved into magazines and Sunday newspapers are also wasteful. If you're like me then I bet you simply shake the magazine until all of the annoying bits fall out and then throw them in the bin.

You need to find places and procedures for attracting people to look for your solution and find you without interrupting them. A correctly designed and marketed website is the ideal solution.

7. Excessive Lead Costs

What do you currently have to do to find new leads? If you're in B2C then list brokers are useful, but as soon as you buy a list you're well aware that the information will be out of date (instant waste). So you pay for your own people or a telesales agency to clean the list. Then you may only get one shot at this list before you pay again. See the problem?

B2B businesses should almost never buy lists. The Internet has opened up a whole range of opportunities for finding information to build your own database.

Every other element of waste involved in promotion (especially trial and error interruptive marketing) is wasting money. You need to look at the important elements of a process and remove the unnecessary. Then with what's left, ask yourself, "How can we do the same thing cheaper?"

Reducing lead cost can also be achieved by selling more to your existing customers and building referral streams.

Before you make assumptions you'll need to measure. There are plenty of people who don't even know how much each lead costs or more importantly how this can be calculated.

So, how many ways can you see for reducing the waste in your marketing? Why not spend a few minutes now to consider how the 7 areas of waste are affecting you?"

Bedsores are Invisibles Murderers

Ha, I snuck up on you without you even suspecting that I came in the room. Ha! I did my job and now because of your inadequate staff, and because of you , , because you thought that the staff was there to care for you and to protect you. You thought! Your thoughts are what helped to put you here. Your thoughts are what are going to help me keep my wretched hands around your neck. And your thoughts, if you keep thinking that you are in a good nursing home, are what will kill you eventually, unless you let someone step in and help you. I will kill you if you will just let me. And, if you are in a nursing home that has less than adequate care, I can turn your life into a living nightmare, not just for you but for your entire family and for any good or bad workers that happen to be involved in your care. That is what the average bedsore will say to you if you would just listen to its words and experience IF bedsores could speak.

Pretend you are a bedsore. What would you feel? How would you sneak up on a person? Ah, there are so many ways, but the best way is to have a negligent or missing staff or workers or nurses. But before blaming the nurses, blame the nursing home and hospital owners; blame the ones who will not allow the money to get more staff, to have more workers so that they can eliminate bedsores in their places.

I gripped you one day, the day after you fell. I gripped you one day by the throat, and took you down to the ground. And I continued to develop there on your skin. And just because you were not in severe pain, just because you thought I was just a little sore, a little weakling of a sore, just because of that, I was permitted to begin slowly taking over your body. I began infecting the rest of your body with bedsores so that I could keep you off of your feet. I, the bedsore, will kill you slowly, but not before I make you suffer immensely. I, the mere, little ignored bedsore will suck the rest of the life out of you until you die.

There is someone who is making trouble for me. And that person is making it harder for me to keep gripping patients in nursing homes. That someone is even making it harder for me to grip patients who are in physical rehab and care centers. Who is this person? The guy wrote a book and in that book, he teaches society the importance of taking care of bedsores but even better, he teaches them how to avoid them. This guy has written an entire section in a chapter, all about bedsores. And he is interfering with my work of killing you by slow, annoying, suffering death. I wish he would not have written that book. His book is alerting people as to what is happening inside of nursing homes. In fact, weird thing is, that he is a doctor. What is he doing? Why is he interfering with my job of slowly killing patients inside of nursing homes. Yes, bedsores can kill. The way that bedsores kill is by breaking down skin integrity. Once that happens, that leaves the patient open to all sorts of infections and bacterias and other things. Once the skin is broken and once the bedsores are permitted to exist, it almost always is pretty much downhill from there. Even a friend of mine had her mom die recently and the initial health problem was a mere bedsore. Yes, she blames it on the bedsores. And yes, I, the bedsore, agree. I take responsibility. I take responsibility even when home care workers and health care workers and nursing homes workers will not take responsibility for those bedsores. Look closely at the nursing homes before entering them. Find out how many residents have bedsores and how often.

Back to the doctor, who is he? What does he say about bedsores? According to the fair use doctrine, I can type some of his words here, and so I do, so that you to can see and hear what this doctor has to say. And, I quote him...

According to the United States Agency for Health Care Policy and Research now the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, as of 1993, 10 percent of all hospital patients and 25 percent of all nursing home residents develop bedsores during their stay. Empirical data indicate that these percentages are on the rise. Bedsores are usually the result of institutional neglect, and although prevention is difficult, bedsores certainly can be prevented. Now, there is more that he writes in this 231 page paperback book, and I quote that also...

Skin ulcers develop from the weight of the body resting on certain areas of the skin for long periods and from unnecessary friction. A primary responsibility of nurses is to relieve that pressure of weight and to avoid the chafing that comes from dragging the patient's buttocks on the sheet. The fact that such a problem persists in every hospital and nursing home tells us that the nursing profession as a whole has not placed a high enough priority on maintaining skins integrity. To that extent, this particular aspect of nursing is an abject failure. Therefore, you will have to learn what duties nurses owe you and your loved ones so you can insist on those services.

All through the book there are facts and stories about what should or should not happen inside of hospitals and nursing homes. And though this article here is not a book review, I want to take this time to suggest that you read this book just to save a life in the future. Like I said, I am the bedsore that will slowly suck the life out of you, or your loved ones if you just give me a few minutes a day so that I can get a grip on you or them.

Bedsores are probably the second most powerful leaders in hospitals and in nursing homes and you, you the resident, you the family do not even notice me when I come into the room. Tough luck! Had you noticed that I might be visiting you, you might have been able to prevent me. But since your eyes are closed and you were watching in the wrong direction, I can and did take hold. Bedsores reign. Ha, yes it is sad. It is sad that a little sore, a little ulcer can bring an entire human being down to his knees, but those are the facts. Bedsores, left untreated and allowed to develop unnoticed, kill patients. They kill human beings. And so far, not too many workers or families are noticing this. Ah, the doctors know it. But you did not know it , until now.

Watch out for bedsores. Turn and move patients every single two hours-- at least, to try and prevent these sores. Watch. Turn. And most of all, bring it to the attention of the staff should they have missed it.

Floor the Competition - Homes With Hardwood Floors Sell Quicker!

When people enter your home they usually look down before up, so that first step is vital for attracting a homebuyer and making a great first impression. This is one reason why more people are installing hardwood floors in their homes.

Hardwood flooring enhances the look of any room and can create a classic ambiance that will beautify the interior design of your home. Residential real estate agents agree that homes with wood floors hold their value better, sell faster and fetch higher prices.

Last year, 99 percent of real estate agents responding to a national survey conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association agreed that homes with hardwood floors are easier to sell. The survey also found that 82 percent believe that homes with hardwood floors sell faster and 90 percent said they would sell for more money.

The American Hardwood Information Center adds that restoring hardwood flooring in the home is one of the best long-term investments to be made.

"Hardwood floors are environmentally friendly, forever fashionable, and will last for generations," said Pembroke Jacobs, president of the Hardwood Manufacturers Association. "Plus, with an expected life span of up to 100 years for certain premium hardwood flooring, you can be assured that the hardwood really is a one-time investment with a very long-term payoff."

Real estate agents also agree that carpeting does not impress potential buyers, but hardwood floors are always a draw. Engineered wood floors impart warmth, depth and richness to a home's decor that cannot be matched by carpeting, tile or vinyl flooring.

Despite the existence of modern architectural trends in flooring, hardwood can still compete with floor tiles and other artificial materials. It comes in a variety of colors and grains; light, medium, or dark shades; and a variety of sizes, styles, finishes and species.

Maple, mahogany and oak are the most popular woods, but some homeowners are investing in exotics such as Brazilian cherry and purple heart.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said that indoor air quality is one of the top health threats and wood floors can help contribute to a healthy living environment. In fact, a recent EPA study found that pesticides used in gardens and homes accumulate on floors and other surfaces in the home, but that wood floors greatly reduce the accumulation of such toxins. Hardwood floors also do not trap or harbor dust mites or molds.

Though wood floors will probably need to be refinished at some point, when properly taken care of they are much easier to maintain than other floor surfaces.

The NWFA recommends regular sweeping of hardwood floors with a soft-bristle broom or dust mop to remove surface dirt and debris. If your floor contains beveled edges, it recommends using a vacuum with a soft bristle brush attachment to remove dirt and debris from between the floorboards.

Having hardwood floors could be the difference between selling your home or watching a potential buyer walk out the door on a less-appealing type of flooring.

Scam-Free Work at Home Jobs - Online Scam Busters That Will Save You a Bundle

Like clockwork, every morning I scan my favorite online news sources to update myself on the "goings-on" of the world. Yesterday was no different. More bailouts, bungles and blunders. Hmm...seemed not much had really changed overnight. Then my eye caught an ad embedded in a story about the dismal state of the global economy.

Headline read, "Scam-Free Work at Home Jobs! No Experience Necessary! Act now!"

That got me thinking, how many people actually fall for these ads? You know those blatant, in-your-face ads with claims that can't be true and "call to actions" that force you to stop whatever you're doing to give full attention to this "once-in-a-lifetime offer."

Let me ask you. Have you ever forked out money for something that sounded like a good product or service to someone who seemed like a nice person and avoided that nagging voice in your head that said, "Sounds too good to be true!?"

You did?

Then what happened? Let me guess. You get the product. It's not even close to what was described, doesn't do half of what the expert testimonials claimed it would. And, you know that 100% money-back guarantee? It isn't worth a dime when the seller goes AWOL.

Then anxiety rushes in and you realize - scam, internet...I've been had.

I'll let you in on a little secret. You're not alone. A lot of people fall for those ads...hardworking, sensible people who for the most part aren't looking to become millionaires. They just want a little slice of their own pie, to take control of their life and provide a comfortable lifestyle for their family.

But the truth is, people do fall for the ads. That's why scammers keep running them. And people keep falling for them. And admittedly, I've fallen for them myself.

Let's see, there was that home business membership site that was pitched to make you millions and when I finally got the chance to peek inside (after forking over more than a $1000), there was nothing there. No articles, no content, nada...in fact the only thing that was there was an affiliate link to sign up other suckers like me.

And then there was the year-long "search engine domination" service using Web 2.0 methods, promising never-before released marketing techniques and new content added to the site throughout the year. Sure, there was content added to this "bare bones" website, but much of it was generated by users trying out the techniques. Occasionally, there was a lame "inspirational" 5 minute audio clip recorded in the guru's car as he was off to put together another deal. Oh, brother. But I should have known something was up when during that first mastermind the "guru" explained call protocol...absolutely no negative comments or the call would end immediately.

How stupid could I be? Turns out, pretty stupid. It wasn't enough that I wasted $1500 on this pathetic excuse for a mastermind program, but what really took the cake was when he took an additional $500 from my PayPal account (which I later recovered).

And then there's the countless other home business programs stacked up in my office, doing nothing but gathering dust.

So what have I learned over the years that will keep you from becoming a victim to another online home business scam? What can you do to ensure that the next work at home job opportunities pitch is scam-free?

Scam-free Work at Home Jobs Checklist

Get to know the Seller
If you're unfamiliar with the group that's pitching the business opportunity or work at home job, make sure you do some online research. Using your favorite search engine, type in the name of the seller and see what results come back. You can also type in the seller's name plus the word "feedback." Visit forums and blogs in the related industry. Post questions. Ask webmasters. Typically, people are more than happy to provide advice and feedback.

Verify Contact Information
Look for a contact link in the navigation menu or in the footer. Legitimate companies have links to real contact information including an email address, business address and phone number. Is there an email address; what kind is it? Be careful if it is a gmail, yahoo, hotmail or other free email account. Legitimate companies usually have their own domain (e.g., businessname.com) though it is no guarantee of legitimacy.

Know What You're Getting
Request a sneak peek of what you're buying. If it's an information product, ask to see a sample. If it's an ebook, ask for the table of contents. If it's an online service or software, maybe there's a demo, a trial, or a video review.

Pay Using Installments
Frequently more expensive products offer the option of paying with installments. If you're unfamiliar with what you're buying or from whom you are buying, always choose this option. Although you may end up paying a bit more than the one payment price, it gives you the chance of seeing what you're buying, before you risk the entire amount on a product that doesn't measure up.

Effectively Manage PayPal Subscriptions
If you're paying by installments and using PayPal, make sure you cancel the subscription after the final installment. If not, this leaves you open to the risk of unauthorized additional installments taken from your account.

Don't Use PayPal if Unfamiliar With the Seller or Service
The dispute process is always much easier and the outcome usually much better when you dispute charges with credit card companies vs. PayPal. I don't know why. Maybe it's because credit card companies have been at it longer; the process is predictable, straightforward. Although PayPal is a great service, this is definitely an area where it needs to improve.

Contact When Seller is Unresponsive to Your Complaints

bbb.org Better Business Bureau
USPS Fraud Inspection Service
ftc.gov/bcp/menus/consumer/education/jobs.shtm Federal Trade Commission

If you're unable to find the seller's contact information (which you'll need to file a report with the above agencies), try your PayPal receipt or call PayPal directly, search the WhoIs Lookup (which provides information on domain ownership), review emails you might have received from the guru, or search for the seller's name using your favorite search engine.

The #1 guaranteed way of never becoming a victim to a job or business opportunity scam again - know from whom you are buying. If you do your homework and take the necessary steps as outlined above, you can be virtually certain that the "scam-free" work at home jobs you are considering are just that...scam-free.

Network Marketing Lets You Use Collaborative Approach - and Get Leveraged Earnings

By helping others to grow their business you ensure growth of your own business. I have seen this theory work even while dealing with competitors. This confirms one of the golden rules - you get what you give to others.

I have been involved in building and running factories to generate profit and credibility - right from constructing foundations for machines and buildings up to the point of developing customers and retaining them. In the process I have had to deal with many agencies - suppliers, customers, consultants, government officials, licensing firms and many others.

Whenever I negotiate a deal with these agencies, I always have two considerations at the back of my mind. One of them is cost reduction and the other one is the prospect of entering into long-term relationship. It is often possible to resort to arm-twisting to get a deal which appears better for you. But there is a better approach - the collaborative approach.

Collaborative Approach - Let us take the case of a supplier or a vendor. While it is possible to force a deal in your favor, collaborative approach makes that unnecessary. In this approach you actually work with the vendor as a consultant to help him to reduce his cost of sale, and then get the savings passed on to you. This creates a win-win situation, good relationship develops and long-term source of supply is ensured.

Similar approach works with customers also. Customers can be helped in growing their business, in solving their technical problems and other issues. This may not give immediate monetary benefit, but there are longer-term advantages. One obvious benefit is that loyal customers are developed. Another equally important benefit is that customers actually advertise for your products. This is a no-cost advertisement endorsed by actual user of your product.

Network marketing uses a collaborative approach that makes it really appealing. It is unfortunate that network marketing or multi-level marketing is not really considered as respectable as it deserves to be. This may be because many network organizations have disappeared because of faulty systems or un-ethical practices. Many programs did not have any products to sell; their business was only recruiting down line members. Such programs and associated legal issues should be totally avoided.

PERSISTENCE PAYS - One of the reasons why new affiliates give up too early and too easily is that they were probably lured by some get-rich-quick scheme to join the program which did not materialize as they were led to believe. In any good network marketing program it is important to realize that results will be forthcoming only thru persistence. Building any business which can yield returns sufficient to support a family takes time.

Good marketing.educationeasy.net Affiliate Programs - While many organizations have disappeared in thin air, there are also organizations that are growing and growing. Many programs offer unlimited earning potential. It is important to join only good programs with proven track record. New affiliates are often new to the Internet business and join with the hope of making some extra cash working part-time or working from home. They need support from the organizations operating the programs by way of training, sales promotion material, discussion forums etc. Many programs provide such support to their affiliates.

Personal Guidance - While all these material can help a new affiliate, there is no substitute for personal guidance. Apart from other benefits it can provide, it at least assures the new affiliate that she is being taken care of and is not left alone. This is where collaborative approach comes into play. Generally the person who sponsors the new affiliate works as a guide. The guide has more experience in this field and helps the new affiliate to grow her business.

Leveraged Earnings - The programs that have a system of providing leveraged earning to its members particularly take advantage of this situation. In leveraged earning, a member earns from the efforts of the down-line members. Suppose you have members in your down-line just below you, and these members have their own down-line members. Like this there are several layers of members below you. Depending upon the program you have joined, you can earn leveraged earning when your down-line members in several layers below you earn their commission.

In this situation it will be to your advantage to help other down-line members earn commission for themselves. They are also happy to earn for themselves with your help. This collaborative approach works out a winner for all concerned.

Apart from monetary benefits, there are other issues involved in the collaborative approach. In my opinion the most important aspect is that the new affiliate does not feel neglected. There are now plenty of free information available in the Internet, most of which can be obtained by visiting websites or thru autoresponders. All the secrets of running successful business are out there. Yet only a few people are able to succeed and earn back their investment. With so much of often-conflicting information people get more confused than educated. If there is a person to guide you it will at least give you a sense of relief.

There are awards also for those who guide others to realize their dreams. This is the sense of satisfaction they get in helping others and earning their life-long gratitude. Other bonus gift is opportunity of building your credibility and gain trust of your business partners.

The sense of belonging, which develops in collaborating with others for overall growth of all, is the real beauty of

leveraged earning.
